Going to the bar for the first time ever tomorrow. Not sure what to expect. Anyone wanna tell me your experiences?

Big difference at bars depending on the type of bar, neighbourhood, time of day etc.

Like, a bar where you go drink? Agree with @wheres_c, it varies. I would expect alcohol and drunk people as a general rule.

Um...people drinking and talking to their friends? Possibly some obnoxiously loud people depending on the place and when you're going. Possibly drunk people dancing, again based on the time and the bar. But based on the fact that you're asking this question I feel like you're probably building it up to be a bigger deal in your head than it actually will be.
ETA: The only time I really go to bars is when my DH's band is playing a gig. People talk, listen to the music, dance (usually in a pretty goofy way since they're drinking), and eat crappy bar food. Sometimes girls would try to flirt or buy the band drinks, at which point they would be like, "Hey sorry but we're actually all married!" Not really anything else to say or note about my bar experiences.

REALLY depends on the bar and the area. Some are basically like restaurants and others are like drunken parties.

Ummm.... Drunk people and laughing your ass off at them dancing and trying to pick each other up?
I mean, generally, that sums it up.

It really depends on the bar.
I used to go to a "townie" bar with locals during college because my lived - there - all - his - life cousin liked karaoke. The bars are small and nestled within a neighborhood. The drinks were cheap, but the atmosphere is kind of depressing filled with people who look like they had a rough day or live at the bar.
Blue Martini is now my "bar." There is an actual bar, but I get table service and order food too. People dress nice and the nights I go there's always a live cover band. I've been to World of Beer once and this is similar to Blue Martini in terms of people wanting to dress up & go out.
Hotel bars are chill and quiet except for maybe a TV tuned to a sports game. The drinks are just okay and overpriced.
My advice...
1) know what you want to drink before you go
2) if there are drink specials look through those, but have #1 as a back up
3) if people are loud and obnoxious ignore them or move...no need to get in a battle of stank faces or worse exchange words & fists
4) drink from a straw or stirrer
5) go to the bathroom before you get there
6) eat before you go
7) if you get a bad vibe or just uncomfortable ie smoke filled room, just go. A bar is a miserable place if you're not having fun.
8) drink, drink & have fun

Totally depends on the bar, area, time of day etc.
But....have fun! It's safe to say I love bars...and have been to my fair share, starting far younger than I should have been

A bar?! I had to read this a few times haha. Man, I think I've logged more hours in a bar than I'd like to admit! Haha! I blame college (and I worked in bars for about 3 years)
Do you drink? What kind of bar? Going with a bunch of people or just one?'
You'll have fun.

That's kind of like asking what restaurants are like no such thing as a single bar experience.
There are lots of meat-market bars, which I haven't gone to in a decade or so, there are pubs/bars (Irish and otherwise) - LO, DH and I go to a local Irish pub multiple times a month for lunch or whatever; there are more "fancy" cocktail bars and lounges, bars with music, bars without music, bars with awesome food and bars with shitty food, bars with good drinks and bars with crappy drinks. There are rough and tumble dive bars and there are high-end bars. There are honky-tonk bars and jazz clubs/bars.
At the end of the day, bars serve drinks and most also serve food. Beyond that, there arent things that all bars are "like" outside of that

@hellobeeboston: the statute of limitations on that kind of law breaking is up, right?

@hellobeeboston: I never had a fake but when I started college, you could get in bars at 18 but couldn't drink unless you were 21. I have no idea if that was legal buuuuuut the local bars let you in!

@Mrs. Jump Rope: Yup! I more drank when I was underage and it was always at home or someone else's home because it was cheap lol. By the time I was legal it wasn't as appealing anymore.

@Boogs: yay I'm not alone. I've been out clubbing in my college days. Never to a bar. I'm nervous not knowing what to expect.

@littleblessings: You've been clubbing, but are nervous about going to a bar?? I don't get it.
blogger / coconut / 8306 posts
@littleblessings: okay, so, bars are like clubs without the dirty, sweaty people rubbing up against you.
@wonderstruck: is that a good enough representation of a bar/club? lol
nectarine / 2272 posts
@wonderstruck: @Mrs. Jump Rope: agree! Bars are just more chill versions of clubs!
pineapple / 12053 posts
@wonderstruck: color me confused. in my eyes a club is a form of a bar!
pomegranate / 3791 posts
@Mrs. Jump Rope: Yes, I would say that's fairly accurate! Haha
hostess / papaya / 10219 posts
@birdofafeather: Yes! I'm confused too! A club is definitely a bar. But with dancing.

@littleblessings: My only advice is know what you are going to order or at least be familiar with what you like to some degree. Bartenders can be impatient and rude to people who seem like they don't belong. Confidence is key. My experience as a cocktail server.

To echo everyone else, have fun, every bar is different, and look up 2 different drinks that you might like to be able to ask for them by name. And dance.
