Has anyone’s LO ever seen a developmental neurologist? My 18 month old has a long awaited appointment coming up to see if they spot any underlying causes for her gross motor delay caused by low muscles tone. I’m just wondering what to expect! Thanks!

@pinkelephant: We have seen a couple of pediatric neurologists - so I'm not sure if it's the same thing. When we went, first a nurse or assistant would ask a bunch of questions about LO's development. Then after the neurologist came in they did some direct examining (shining light and seeing how LO's eyes followed it, knee reflexes, etc) and then also just observed as the doctors or we played with him. They were usually longer appointments. We went because of LO's leg stiffness and pain that made it hard for him to walk.

@luckygirl: thanks for this! Our appointment is actually tomorrow. I've been told to expect it to be 90 minutes. LO has been particularly sassy lately, so it's going to be a looooong 90 minutes if she's not into whatever the doctor is hoping she'll do.

@pinkelephant: Good luck tomorrow! Hope it all goes smoothly and quickly. For long appointments, sometimes myself or my husband takes LO out of the room for little breaks if he starts getting bored/antsy, even just to walk down the hall and look out the window. Then the other one of us can stay and chat with the doctor, since they usually don't need LO for the whole time. Let us know how it goes!

@CatchAFallingStar: Thanks for asking! The appointment went really smoothly! We have to do some follow up bloodwork, but things look pretty good so far. The sleep gods were smiling on me and she took a nice long nap before the appointment, so thankfully she was cooperative!
For anyone else who finds this in the future, our appointment entailed much of the same things as any other developmental assessment (like early intervention) - a questionaire for me about the baby's social skills, a lot of interactive play to assess her fine motor skills, cognitive skills, ability to follow directions, to recognize/name objects, etc., as well as to observe her gross motor capabilities. There was a quick exam of her eyes, ears, and body the same way there would be at her pediatrician.
