This might get long! But if you're into furniture arranging and figuring out rooms/spaces, please weigh in if you have a minute!!
We have three good sized bedrooms upstairs, and LMW and WJ each have their own room and we'd like to keep it that way. BUT we really need a designated area for overnight guests since our parents are getting elderly, and when they come to visit, since we have small energetic kids, they really need their own space. After LMW was born, we moved the guest room bed (a queen sized ikea platform bed) into the basement (which is mostly finished with a poor carpeting job and a small part of one wall missing) and made the guest room WJ's room. Right now all that's in there is his crib (made into a toddler bed), his dresser, his nightstand, and his beanbag chair.
Even though our basement is really nice for an "almost" finished basement (we've got a set of couches down there, a tv, lots of toys, etc.. it's a great playroom!) My mom doesn't feel comfortable sleeping in the basement, and frankly neither do I. It gets super cold down there no matter what time of year it is, so I don't like putting guests down there. When my parents come over, we inflate our queen aerobed in the living room and they sleep in the kids' play area.
Well, now that WJ is getting older, we've tried out using his room as a guest room with the queen aerobed in there, and we have him sleep in our room. It works great!! especially because our bedroom is HUGE and we have space for ANOTHER queen bed in there (we have a queen bed ourselves, and we can easily fit the queen aerobed in there).
So here's my question. Obviously the thing that makes most sense is to put the queen ikea bed in his room and have him sleep on it, and make it up for guests when they come over (and have him sleep on the queen aerobed in our room). But the reason we haven't already done this is because I don't want him to get used to sleeping on such a big bed. But the queen ikea bed in the basement is just sitting there, unused, while our guests are sleeping on the aerobed either in the living room or in WJ's room (while WJ sleeps in our room... and I sleep on the couch downstairs because I cannot sleep in the same bed as him, I get zero sleep).
The more we realize we're not moving into a house with a 4th bedroom anytime soon, the more I think we should just put the queen ikea bed in WJ's room.
Our other idea is to get a queen futon to put in WJ's room for guests. That way he can stay in his bed but when guests come over, he can sleep on the aerobed in our room. But that still leaves the queen ikea bed in the basement unused AND brings ANOTHER queen sized bed into our house. That would be the third one including ours. And we are dying to upgrade to a king sized bed for ourselves. AND he's gonna need to upgrade to at least a twin sized bed soon. So that plan would mean purchasing 2 new beds in the near future.
I know this is all very long and silly. Such a first world problem... where do I put all my queen sized beds??? ;P But what would you do?
