I would probably say that we're not sure yet and don't have a whole lot of names picked out. Hopefully they take the hint! I don't think it's fair to have to choose a different name because someone else MIGHT name their child that name.

Tell her NO! BIL/SIL ran some names by us (we didn't ask them to) just to make sure we weren't thinking using any of them for our daughter. Their girl is 2.5 months older than M.

I would stay mum. If she wants to share her names with you and you can tell her the name is free & clear then that's cool. TBH I really don't think it matters in the grand scheme of things. If your LOs become besties and share the same name that will be fun for them.

I wouldn't share. At first I was thinking you could ask to see her list of names to see if there were any overlaps, but then what would you do if there were a conflict? You shouldn't have to concede to her if that happened.

I would just say that you weren't sure and had a lot you were still considering.

I agree with all of the above, we have 2 friends due right after us and have a similar situation. I basically told one of our friends that my kids name was for life, and quite honestly who knew if our kids would be around each other for life, so their name choices would have no effect on our names. One of those couples did tell us their names though, fortunately they were not on our short list, although one had been part of the name discussion at some point.

ETA: In all honesty though if they had chosen a name (it would have to be THE NAME they were going with) I would probably try and find a different name, I would not want the conflict, and I like less common names so I wouldn't want my child to share with someone who may be potentially close to the family.

We had friends that told everyone their name for their little girl. Well, other friends go into labor first, have a little girl, other friends come and visit, and what do you know----Friends had picked the name they were going to use. Needless to say they stopped talking. The bad thing was the second set of friends said that they wouldn't use the name because it didn't work for them. Well, I guess they changed their mind!

I agree with others that it's not the end of the world if they have the same name. My friend and I are due 3 weeks apart and neither of us are sharing our names. We've joked about what if we pick the same name, but honestly, if we both fell in love with the same name, neither would be offended if we both used it. Well.. I guess she'll almost definitely have the baby first, so she won't be offended if I use the same name. I would take that into consideration naming our LO but it wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. Family would be different.

ETA: This friend and I actually do have the same name, so we thought it would be extra funny if our LOs did too!

Ummmm..... It's your name too. Why should they get dibs? If they care so much they should tell you their name so you can just say yes or no.
