Death of your spouse, parents, children or sibling is 3 days and any other relative is 1 day. I have no idea if my work includes your spouses relatives in that or if I would have to use vacation/personal time for that. Thankfully it has not come up. We are also allowed to supplement the bereavement time with additional vacation/personal time.

I SAH but I know the policy for DH's job. He gets four days for parents (including in laws), siblings (including in laws), grandparents (including in laws), children, spouse, civil union or domestic partner, and grandchildren. Two days for aunt, uncle, niece, or nephew (including in laws for all). It is up to the supervising manager if they require proof of relationship and if so, what kind of proof

@DesertDreams88: we get a decent amount of vacation accrued each year and can bank huge amounts so its not too bad

"Eligible employees receive up to three (3) working days of leave for an in-state death and up to five (5) working days for an out-of-state death, not to exceed a maximum for five (5) days per fiscal year. For the purposes of bereavement leave, family shall include: Spouse Grandparents, Children, Grandchildren, Parents, Like relations created by marriage, e.g., step-child, father-in-law, etc., Siblings, Domestic Partner, Fiancee"

@snarkybiochemist: I guess I remembered incorrectly... I thought we got increased amounts for spouse and children but the policy changed. We used to.

This is from from our employee handbook:
Regular full-and part-time employees who experience a death in the immediate family may be granted a paid leave up to three working days. An immediate family member includes: parents, spouses/domestic partners, siblings, children, grandparents, grandchildren and immediate family by law.
Additional time may be granted by the employee’s department director and charged against accrued PTO, if available, or approved without pay.

I think the statement 'immediate family by law' means it includes all the listed family members of your spouse as well as your own.

I just checked because I wasn’t sure. Policy is 3 days for specific family members and “spouse’s or domestic partner’s grandparent or grandchild” is one of the relationships listed.

I don't have bereavement leave in my current job. In my last job it was 2 days for your spouse/parent/child/sibling and nada for anyone else.

None. Emergency leave (regular leave granted immediately) is only for parents, spouse, children, and siblings. I could probably get emergency leave for my spouse's parents and siblings, but I wouldn't bet about my nieces or nephews.

Now if it isn't a hardship to my job, I would be able to take leave for any of the above.

I'm sorry - that seems unfair. My company's policy is 3 days bereavement leave for grandparents, step-grandparents, or grandparents-in-law.

3 days for immediate family (sibling, parents, children, grandkids, grand parents, great grands) of yourself or spouse.

I work for the US federal government. We don't get specific bereavement leave, but can use up to 13 days of sick leave for bereavement for family members, defined as:

1. Spouse, and parents thereof;
2. Sons and daughters, and spouses thereof;
3. Parents, and spouses thereof;
4. Brothers and sisters, and spouses thereof;
5. Grandparents and grandchildren, and spouses thereof;
6. Domestic partner and parents thereof, including domestic partners of any individual in 2 through 5 of this definition; and
7. Any individual related by blood or affinity whose close association with the employee is the equivalent of a family relationship.

@hitchhiker: this is such an inclusive policy!

Oh wow I wasn't aware you get days off.... my mom passed away last year and DH took 2 weeks off of vacation time as we had to fly out of country. I worked for myself so I was good (I just stopped taking projects). Didn't even occur to me that we could have checked ....

@snarkybiochemist: 3 days off if you lose a child? That is ludicrous.

@Ajsmommy: what do you mean you want to push? Have you talked to your boss and they won’t accommodate?

I would just say to my boss I need Monday off for a funeral - I’m willing to work that out however you want via made up time, unpaid time, or a borrowed day

Salary means that you get paid the same no matter how many hours you work during that time period.

You could not control your child getting sick, there was no better way to manage your time.

You have a family emergency and need to take 1-2 days off.

Write them a letter stating that you've had a death in the family and will be taking bereavement leave. If they fight you then it should be covered as an unpaid FMLA day.

If this is happening to you, its happening to others. Stop letting your company roll over you. Stand up for you family! If you don't go in to work next week will they fire you?
