The grandparents are already asking what to get my LO for his first birthday in a few months. We don't have a huge family so we won't be overwhelmed by gifts. What high quality/long lasting toys would you recommend for this age? Are there any essential items we might need that I am not thinking of yet (like first pair of walking shoes)?

LO's fave 1st birthday gifts were a pbk anywhere chair (or any kid sized chair), a radio flyer walker wagon, and a b. toys fire engine. And lots of books!

First pair of walking shoes is nice, but those aren't in my mind "lasting" as they grow out of shoes so quickly.
For our LOs first birthday one parent got her the Cozy Coupe (her favorite toy hands down) and the other got her a battery powered four wheeler (also a favorite.) We chose to do outside toys, as they last mulitple seasons and hold up nicely. We also got a water table & wagon. Things she will grow into for the next several years.

Water table (we asked Aunts, Uncle, cousins to all go in istead of a bunch of little gifts, and they loved the idea)

Radio Flyer Wagon (got for Christmas but loves it)I think all of these will last her for a couple years. You get a play kitchen as well.
I would stay away from shoes cause you have no clue what size by the time LO starts walking.

My mom usually does a child size rocking chair or something similar to that for 1 year (my godson got a rocking boat that was super cute...but something that rocks and will be long lasting)

We normally gift the convertible tricycle.

at shortly after 1 charlie loved loved his push trike. also we've had a play kitchen since 9 months and still gets almost daily play at 4 years!
