I have really wide hips, so every suit always digs into my sides giving me a huge muffin top. If I buy a bottom to fit my hips then it is too big in the butt and it is baggy, and then even more when wet.
Any suggestions?

I'm pretty sure this is the kind of bathing suit I need this year, so I am no help.

I don't have wide hips, but they are soft and not particularly toned, so I have the same problem. If I buy big enough that they don't pinch, they are too loose in the butt and slide down when getting out of the water.
I have one pair of regular bikini bottoms from the Gap that are pretty good, and I have better luck with foldover styles since the fold is a little more forgiving. But it's still very hit or miss.
I find ones with too much coverage don't help and just make it look like I'm hiding something (which I am, but I don't want it to LOOK like I am )

Maybe a high waist bottom? That way it's hitting you closer to your waist than your hips?

I just got these: http://athleta.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=97474&vid=1&pid=964895072
I feel like they are fairly adjustable because of the sides? might be worth a try? they are comfy and easy to move in- I got them + a tankini top for chasing my kid around.

What about something like this . . . being able to ruche the sides might make for a better more custom fit: I would do a darker color bottom, and a coordinating print for the top (although I would choose a different top for you) . . . to put the emphasis on your upper body and bewbs . . . ?

@Mrs. Blue: Maybe we should get matching ones.
@lawbee11: I have tried those and just no.
@Silva: Those are cute!
@Foodnerd81: pre baby I had some from Jcrew that worked but now I don't fit in them

@Smurfette: Yeah, high waist doesn't look great on me either. I love the ones @MsLipGloss: posted!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@MsLipGloss: What you don't think I can pull off that top while chasing after R? You don't think everyone on the beach or at the pool wants to see my boobs?
That could work.
I really just need to go try some on but I am putting it off.

@Smurfette: Hey, I'm not saying I am opposed to showing some boob (you or anyone else for that matter!) , but yeah, straps may be helpful/beneficial!

I posted something like this in another thread, but my attitude lately is, I'm gonna make the absolute best of what I've got, there's no such thing as *perfect* . . . and GUILT/SELF-LOATHING . . . AIN'T NOBODY GOT TIME FO THAT! You are going to look smashing! Promise!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@looch: No. In the past I found that they didn't flatter though.

Aw man, this is totally my problem too. Huge thighs, NO butt...
The best solution I ever had was to buy teenager swim bottoms in the biggest size they had. But, that isn't going to work anymore, no more low-cut swim bottoms for me! So, I have no idea what's going on this summer. Lots of cursing in lots of dressing rooms...

@MsLipGloss: thanks love! I am working on it. ShawnT is kicking my booty!

@Smurfette: is it wrong that his hotness is distracting?! that man is f-i-n-e fine!

@MsLipGloss: Love this attitude!! I've got to get myself into that mode of thinking.

@Smurfette: I'd take a look at Athleta, it's on the same site as Gap.
They have a lot of athletic options, which might suit you.
If you do happen to look at one pieces, I really like the ones at Jcrew, there's a one shoulder one with ruching that is super flattering, but it kind of has a lot of fabric, so it takes a bit of getting used to.

@Smurfette: I tend to wear skirt buttons! That way I can buy a size that fits my booty and still give me the hip coverage I need. Preferably one that is high waist so it does give me the muffin top!

@Smurfette: So this is going to sound crazy, because they are LESS coverage and people tend to want MORE coverage in their problem areas....but I have the same issue (very soft hip/love handle area that caused terrible muffin top) and the best bottoms that work are tie sides.
They have to be REAL tie sides, not the fake ones that are sewn together. Since they are totally adjustable, you can just tie them a little looser (not so loose they will pull down in water of course) and you will magically have way less muffin top.
I'm a size 12 right now and even when pregnant and HUGE, I was wearing tie side bottoms with my maternity tankini top. You can find some tie-sides that aren't teensy, tiny string bikinis. Like these: http://us.asos.com/Panache-Cleo-Swim-Lucille-Tie-Side-Bikini-Bottoms/12rfur/?iid=3498867&mporgp=L1BhbmFjaGUvUGFuYWNoZS1DbGVvLVN3aW0tTHVjaWxsZS1UaWUtU2lkZS1CaWtpbmktQm90dG9tcy9Qcm9kLw..&WT.ac=rec_viewed

@Anagram: I agree! I think too much coverage can highlight an area instead of minimizing it. It's a balance, to be sure. I am a huge fan of side-tie bikinis and rarely wear anything else!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@Anagram: I feel like the ties would draw more attention to my hips. I have tried ties one in the past and I do think they were just to tiny to work. I had to loosen so much.
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
@Smurfette: The trick is to tie the strings slightly forward, toward your hip bones, not in the center of your sides.

I am heavy on the bottom too and would love to wear boy shorts but I think they look best on thin legs!
I got these in Aqua and Black last summer from Hapari - they fit tight so they don't sag but at the waist they are a little looser so it doesn't cause muffin top
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
Have you thought about shorts like these? I thought about getting these to run after E in.

@blackbird: Those are cute. Shorts are so hard for me cause of the thunder thighs. This is so hard!

I have big thighs and I definitely have hips. String bottoms are the only ones that work for me without giving me muffin top.

Oh, I also have one like this suit from Target, but in red, and it's quite flattering:

@Mrs. Blue: LOL! I died at that photo!!! It's like Mrs. Where's Waldo in a bathing suit!
cantaloupe / 6164 posts
@Smurfette: Are you really opposed to a skirt? I like good coverage - especially now with a crazy toddler. I have a skirt from Target that I really like. I don't think it makes me look like a granny. I usually like the ties out a little bit, so the skirt is longer. I wore it pre-preg, pregnant, and post-preg & it's looked good on every body shape.
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
@Smurfette: Word of caution: skirted swimsuits emphasize hips . . . sure, they can provide more coverage, but less is more, in this case.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@MsLipGloss: Gotcha. DH will thank you later. He would have hated a skirt.
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
@Smurfette: I was just going to say the same thing as @MsLipGloss: . I bought a skirted bottom a couple of years ago because I thought it would be flattering on my hips and thighs but it just makes me look bigger than traditional bikini bottoms.
blogger / coconut / 8306 posts
@Smurfette: I have a red "vintage style" one-piece with ruching that is SO FLATTERING. I got it at Macy's years ago. I'll have to find a pic and see if it's still available. Even at my heaviest, I felt confident in it.
ETA it's by Jantzen
cantaloupe / 6164 posts
@MsLipGloss: @lawbee11: My experience is exactly the opposite. My two skirted bottoms are the most flattering ones I own. I have a boy short, regular, and tie & don't like any of them.
@Smurfette: Maybe you should just go into a store and pick one of every style and try it on. Then you'll know which you prefer and looks best. You're the only one with your particular body, so you'd be the best judge!
