LOL, well I finished Gone Girl fairly recently and enjoyed it quite a bit. Two kids, too many work commitments, and being in the middle of boards with my students- I'm pretty far behind!
Lately I've been in a Bill Bryson kick since then, I've re-read A Walk In The Woods and am just starting In A Sunburned Country, about Australia.

Gone Girl is a good read!
I'm about to finish The Invention of Wings, it's good. Last month I read Girl on a Train, I liked it.

I just read the goldfinch by Donna tartt and it was really engaging and well written! I read it on the iPad though my library while nursing the baby.

I read All the Light We Cannot See this summer. It was one of the best books I've read in quite some time! It's historical fiction set during WWII.
I read the Millennium Trilogy (Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, etc.) earlier this year and the 4th book in the series a month ago. They are pretty gripping if you like thrillers.

I just read We Need to Talk About Kevin, by Lionel Shriver. Definitely not for everyone as it's a bit dark, but I'm a clinical social worker and always enjoy these types of books over others.
@Keybee: I'm about to start the Invention of Wings so I'm glad to hear you liked it! I also enjoyed Girl on a Train.

@bushelandapeck: OMG I read that book while pregnant with LO1 (a boy) and it seriously scarred me. I could not stop thinking about it, and even though I usually re read books a million times, I think I will never re read that one.
I just read You Should Have Known, and found it really well written and interesting.

@lamariniere: All the Light is on my Christmas list. I love WWII stories.
@bushelandapeck: I could NOT get into We Need to Talk. I tried and tried but it just didn't grab me at all. I'm also a SW, so I thought it would be something I'd really get into!
Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl is good, but I actually liked her other books (Sharp Objects and Dark Places) more! They recently made Dark Places into a movie, too.

@littlebug: It was hard to get into, for sure., Her writing style is unique (and wordy, if you ask me) but the content is what kept me interested and it was totally worth it at the end. @hilsy85: I have a son too...and it has definitely kept me up at night!

I just finished The Lake House by Kate Morton and really enjoyed it (I even managed to finish it, which is a feat lately!)

@lemondrop: I've read Gone Girl and really enjoyed it. I've never heard of Bill Bryson. I'll check him out!
@Keybee: I've read Gone Girl and Girl on the Train. I'll check out the other one. Thanks!
@MamaCate: Goldfinch was so good! I started reading it and couldn't get into it at first. Then I tried again a few months later and couldn't put it down!
@lamariniere: I LOVE historical fiction! I'm definitely going to look into that one. I've read the Millenium Series but wasn't aware there was a new one!
@bushelandapeck: I read that a while ago. There is a movie, too. The story was powerful but her writing style was torturous to get through.
@hilsy85: Yeah, that one is definitely not on my re-read list.
@littlebug: I've read all her books! I loved them all.
@lovehoneybee: I'll check that one out. Thank you!

I'm in the midst of finishing My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante. It's a series of books about two girls growing up in poverty in Post World-War II Naples. So far the first one has been fascinating and I'm really excited to read more about the lives of these women.

@Ra: the original author died somewhat recently and his estate authorized publication of a 4th book written by someone else. I thought that it really retained the feel and tone of the original series, so definitely check it out if you liked the trilogy!

Room. They're making it into a movie and I like to read the book first and Im glad I did because I don't think they'll be able to capture the voice of the child well
Off-topic but when did gillian Flynn's dark places become a movie? It's already streaming and I don't feel like a heard anything about it

@MrsKoala: Ill look into those, too! Historical fiction is my favorite genre.

I just finished The Martian and really enjoyed it.
Others that I have read (relatively) recently and enjoyed are The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Claire North and The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert.

@lamariniere: that is one of my favorite genres - just added it to my wish list, thanks!
@Ra: if you like historical fiction (particularly WWII), have you ever read Those Who Save Us? Not a new book, but one that i read years ago and loved. I've also enjoyed some of Robert Goddard's books - In Pale Battalions is one that comes to mind by name.
@MamaCate: I just read the Goldfinch too and loved it!

I just finished Uprooted by Naomi Novik, which I really loved. It was sort of in the genre of fantasy or fairy tale.

@bushelandapeck: @hilsy85: I also read that when pregnant! It was a great book but I thought I would need therapy afterwards. And also...I'll never eat a lychee.
Some of my recent favorites are "We Are Not Ourselves" by Matthew Thomas, "The Green Road" by Anne Enright, and "Station Eleven" by Emily St. John Mandel.

@Ra: have you read the invisible bridge? It is AMAZING--set in Hungary and Paris during WWII and is very emotional (duh given the subject). So well written.
ETA and Life After Life--also very very good. If you like family sagas, I would also recommend Jane Smiley's trilogy, which starts with Some Luck, and then continues with Early Warning. It follows a family from 1920 I believe--each chapter is 1 year.

I just finished Tell the Wolves I'm Home and it was really good. If you like nonfiction, I'm currently reading Just Mercy, which is very well written but will probably leave you outraged, fair warning.

@Silva: Yes, that book is so, so good.
I just finished "Fates and Furies" and really enjoyed it.

@meredithNYC: I'm still surprised more people haven't heard of it. My best friend loved it, too. It really stuck with me after finishing it, too.

I second all the light we cannot see. I've been recommending it to everyone. I had a copy out from the library but I think I'm going to buy it and add it to my permanent collection. I thought it was beautifully written.
