Well it looks like we are going to have to upgrade our car to handle three car seats. Any ideas where to start?
We will have an almost 4 year old, almost 2 year old, and newborn.

Our next vehicle will be a Chevrolet Traverse since it's got 3rd row seating but still a more compact feel. I don't like minivans & don't like huge SUVs
ETA: We got the Combi Coccoro convertible seat b/c it's compact & can fit 3 across if need be.

@runsyellowlites: I really like the Traverse and Acadia (basically the same car), but I was recently talking to a friend who has 3 in a third row SUV (Acura MDX) and she really wishes they had gotten a minivan instead. She's SUPER anti-minivan, so it definitely got me thinking about a minivan instead.

We have a honda Odyssey and love it. Right now we only have one lo and a 65 lb dog that comes with us pretty much everywhere. But my mom has the same van and she drives lo, her baby cousin, and our dog all the time.

I used to be anti mini van but caved. I love my odyssey. It's awesome.... I only have two kids but I also have grandparents that come on a lot of outings with us. They would not have been comfortable with 3rd row SUV. We took all the seats out this weekend (super easy since the back row just folds into the floor) and hauled my dads couch across town. My BFF said she didn't think I'd ever get a mini van, but here I am

@Weagle: yikes, we're about to get an MDX and plan on 3 kids...do you know what she didn't like about it?

We have the Honda odessey also. We have four car seats.

@hilsy85: There's just really not a lot of room once you get three seats in there. And if the third row is up, there's not a lot of trunk space. Even with the third row down its pretty full with strollers and gear. Plus, I think she said you can't put carseats in the third row.

@runsyellowlites did you see baby gizmo's review of the traverse? She loved it except for the fact that it didnt have anchors on all seats in the third row. She said it was a deal breaker for her. Dont know if thats a deal breaker for you but overall the car looked awesome!

I had an MDX and it was hard to use the third row.
We now have an Acadia and the captain's seat in the second row make it so much easier for someone to get to the back seat!

@hilsy85: we have a good friend who also has an MDX and she complains about the little 3rd row in the back. But she can fit a kid back there who is big enough to use a (no back) booster. But with the two carseats in the middle row, it's easier for the kid to climb into the 3rd row from the trunk!
If we had three kids, we would just get 3 Radian Diono's which can usually fit across most vehicles because they are narrow. Or if we had a bigger car budget, I'd want a Tahoe or Escalade.

@runsyellowlites: we have a traverse and I personally think it's huge when I drive it.... maybe it's because my car is a small impreza

minivan. if you have 2 rear facing, getting to a 3rd row is really hard in most SUVs & you end up sending them through the trunk, but if you have 2 under 2, i'm assuming you're gonna have a big ass stroller & stuff back there that would making climbing in the back hard. i would do a minivan with captain chairs, and then remove the seat behind you, put the newborn in the captains chair, the rear facing convertible behind the captains chair & the preschooler in the rear seat with no seat in front of it. that gives you space to put the bucket in & access to the RF convertible & an open path for preschooler to get themselves in & out of the car.

Seems like things were so much easier (and less safe) when we were little and you were only in a carseat for 2 or 3 years, max!
Question for people who fit 3 carseats across in one row-- wasn't it really hard to access the middle one? I'm still pregnant with #1 and still haven't even figured out how the single infant car seat really works, but it just seems like it would be really hard to get to the middle one. Do you just put the oldest kid in the middle, who can climb in himself and you just need to buckle?

@Foodnerd81: you put the least protected in the middle because it's the safest spot (provided you can get all seats installed safely), so if you have an infant rear facing, a forward facing toddler in a 5 pt restraint, and a child in a booster, the belt positioning booster would ideally be in the center because they are the least protected, but in reality it would be next to impossible for the child to buckle themselves in smooshed between the other 2 seats so you'd probably end up switching them & putting the FF toddler in the center. BFF had twins + a LO 2 years older than the twins, getting them in her sedan was AWFUL, in my SUV, still AWFUL, then she got a minivan when the twins were maybe 1.5..... i hated minivans until that day, it rocked my world =D

@mrs. bird: I hate minivans too -- we had them all growing up and my parents still have them, even though all their kids are adults now -- but I think if I had 3 under 5, I wouldn't have a lot of choice! DH would be so unhappy though!
squash / 13764 posts
@SAHM0811: yeah I'm pretty sure that's the convertible carseat we're going with...but then again, we probably won't have LO #2 for at least another 2-3 years, and who knows after that, so I'm probably over thinking this right now

My parents have a Honda Odessey, and while I detest minivans in general, this is actually a decent ride. They have a Graco My Ride in the captains chair behind the drivers seat, works really well for my dad who picks up my son from day care.

I'm beginning to think that minivans are the way to go. I need to embrace this, and stop with the anti-minivan feeling. I embraced my Mommy body, now I need to embrace my Mommy ride
Thanks for the advice

@citymouse: I actually hadn't seen that! Tbh I don't think I'd ever be comfortable putting a carseat in the 3rd row (so far from me), atleast not all of them, & with our spacing we'd likely only have 2 in actual carseats at a time. G is in a backless booster & could sit anywhere. And I'm also not using the latch system for install, we couldn't in either of our last cars. Hopefully by the time we actually upgrade they'll have them though, then it'd be a non-issue. *fingers-crossed* lol
@lavender: Oh I'm sure! I just know it's not has huge as say a Tahoe, which I would never want to drive personally! I much prefer smaller cars but at this point it's just not functional for us anymore. =/
