My 6.5 year old daughter loves giving gifts and doing art/projects. I’m trying to think of something she could make (with my help if needed) for Christmas gifts that people would actually like/use. So far my only idea is some kind of homemade book marks (she loves to read) but I don’t have an actual plan for those either!
Any ideas? Have you ever received a homemade gift that you loved? What are you kids giving for Christmas?

I've done Christmas tea towels before with the kids' handprints in green paint (christmas trees), or the same on oven mitts. Just google diy christmas tea towels kids and there are tons of ideas.

So this is an edible gift, but people always love it. We make chocolate spoons and marshmallows (dip them in melting chocolate and top with all kinds of things—peppermint, different flavored chips, etc.). We pair it with hot chocolate, either homemade or store bought. People expect them from us every year now! DD has a blast making them.
This year we also made shaving cream paint cards (they LOVED doing this) and we’re making salt dough ornaments.
One of my friends recently made something I want to try: they made crayon shavings, put them in glass bulb Christmas ornaments, and used a blow dryer to melt the bits. It looks awesome!

Tie dyeing fabric items could be a pretty cool project for that age? Even if it's just like, a tea towel, socks, or throw pillow cover.

We did finger print magnets one year for grandparents. The kids loved it and it was easy. You use the white foamy clay stuff and roll a ball, flatten and put your thumb print or fingerprints in it in shapes. Once they dry you can paint them (we did them as lady bug thumb prints and flowers were like 4 or 5 fingerprints in a circle. ) and glue the magnet on the back.

We did fruit prints with fabric paint on tea towels and they were beautiful! We also did fimo dough key fobs and I think the tutorial is on hellobee. You can get cabochons for fimo dough at craft stores. I made some for all the dads in 2013 and my husband's still looks great! We have also done the marble paper products with the shaving cream and that looks great as well. For the past two years I have been going to two ceramic studios learning how to throw pots and now I take my kids with me and we do ceramic ornaments each year. I just roll out a clay slab and cut out the shapes with Cookie cutters and they paint them with the glaze and then my instructor fires them. You may want to see if any ceramic studios in your area are offering ornament making classes right now! I really like doing ceramics because it's such a durable item and it's something that they can have forever as long as it doesn't get broken! On the other hand, the salt dough things that we have done in the past ended up getting shriveled or bloated or soft over time. I feel like a lot of the craft kits you can get at the stores are mostly just repackaged plastic items that the kids just assemble as opposed to really learning how to use the materials. As far as edible crafts go, last year we made buckeyes and this year we are doing the peanut butter cracker sandwiches dipped in white chocolate as well as chocolate-covered macadamia nut clusters.

You can also look for the paint your own pottery studios instead of a regular ceramic studio for basically the same idea! we have one in town but I know when I was a kid my local craft store also had it as an option.

We do ornaments at the local pottery painting place, but it adds up quickly, plus there's the whole battle over them wanting to paint something ridiculous and expensive when you just want them to slap some paint on some Santa ornaments.

Do they still make those old loom things that you can use to make pot holders? My poor grandmothwr had a ton of them but pot holders are necessary and do eventually get old and tossed.
The acrylic beads that you make a pattern and melt together can be used to make ornaments.
Garland for a tree by stringing bells onto ribbon or string.
I don't know if a 6 year old could do this but there's some new yarn out that has loops in it. You can make a blanket or scarf by "finger knitting" it. There's youtube tutorials.

Oh and I found kits for bookmarks made out of that black scratch art paper. That might be a good way to make several book marks.

Soap or bath bombs? Klutz has some kits I've been eyeing. Also magnets are fun and easy to make. Decoupaged vases or coffee mugs with the dishwasher safe mode podge on top. Oil based sharpies on ceramics work too.

Every year, we buy would cutouts (stars, wreaths, Christmas trees) from Michaels or the like and have the kids decorate them. We then glue ribbon to them to make ornaments.

My mom gave DD1 a Cra-Z-Art shell art kit for her birthday. The kids went to town painting all the shells in the kit, then more shells they found on the beach. Then they gave a lot of these shells away as gifts. They turned out really cute and the kids had lots of fun making them. And there's a lot of paint so it's enough for months of birthdays and art projects
