I voted stay, though it depends how much you need the money you would be saving and whether the move would be temporary. For us, I'd say 30mins is close enough already to family and being in a lovely neighbourhood is so important to me.

@bunnylove08: It's tough... I mean, as tempting as the saving is, there is no way I would consider moving in with my or DH's parents (clash of personalities would make it too stressful!) unless it was the only way we could save up enough in a reasonable amount of time for a house deposit. If you are comfortable sharing with your family, you should maybe do it...

While I think it'd be nice to be minutes away for easy weekday and regular drop ins, I'd stay in my 'ideal' area, unless you are depending on them for regular child care. Otherwise, 30-45 minutes is not really that far for a weekend visit.

Oh wow, that savings could be life changing. Over 2-3 years, that's 60-90k more to put toward your own house or anything for the future. That really changes things. Is the house big enough for everyone comfortably?

@bunnylove08: Oh ok. Then the other thing would be how your family interacts with your sister's family. That's a big step! Even if you're super close with your sister...but to save $2500 a month would be great--would you have a time frame for staying at your dad's house? What does your husband think?

I just read your savings and for how long. That's a tough one! $2500 a month savings would be awesome, but 2-3 years is a long time. My suggestion is to factor all the moving expenses and the misc home maintenance you'll eventually spend on your dad's place, then see if that number each month will still be worth the trouble. With 2 families, utilities would be a little more as well (even if it's a shared expense). Narrow down every expense and see if it's still an attractive figure.

I think there are just way too many unknown factors for me to weigh in. Just hope your family can come to a unified decision, because I think that is more important than what the "right choice" is.
