We're thinking about taking LO to Hawaii around next spring, when he'd be between 6 months-1 year. We'd be staying in the Hilo area (with family) and I've been there when I was younger but can't remember what there is to do. Is there anything for us besides the volcanoes?

We were there recently but before we had LO. In addition to visiting the volcanoes, we did alot of snorkeling and hiking. We drove all over the island finding different beaches and waterfalls. We also checked out some coffee farms, went to Merriman's, and visited some historic sites. We had a great time and I would love to go back one day!

There are tons to do. I have family in Waimea and we spent a lot of time at the beach, which my daughter loved. We also went to the hotels and hung out at the pools. My favorite thing to do was drive Saddle Road. The views are amazing.

We go there every year. There is so much to do. We always go whale watching. The Hilo side has amAzing waterfall hikes and botanical gardens. There's volcano national park, the waipo valley and Parker ranch. Luau at the royal kona. We always go up to the telescopes at night, the coffee farms by captain cook, snorkeling at two step and sometimes a snorkel boat trip. I could go on and on. Oh we usually kayak to the captain cook monument too. We love the big island.

@catlady: @SnowLion: @Mrs. Jacks: You guys are totally making me excited to go now! I'm leaning towards February because so far I'm seeing fares lowest then. Obviously he won't remember anything but hopefully we can make these activities a tradition since this won't be our last trip to Hilo.
@Mrs. Jacks: Do you think Volcano National Park is safe with an 8mo? I vaguely remember it from when I was younger and people seem to mention the vog?

We took DS when he was 11 months and there was plenty to do! At that age though, we mostly just did what we wanted and dragged DS around with us. We even hiked down Waipio Valley with him in the Ergo. I would definitely recommend taking a carrier! We barely used our stroller.

@spaniellove: we brought our oldest there when she was 8 months old. You can go to the visitor center and they'll show you where the vog is blowing and where you'll be safe. We felt very comfortable with taking her. We also went for a night hike where you can see the glowing lava and it really was amazing. Little one just slept and was an easy baby for it!
