What is your biggest fear as a parent?
Mine is that I am totally going to screw her up. She is going to be the Mean Girl in middle and high school. Will end up pregnant at 16. Do drugs. etc.....

@pelikila: Definitely mine too. I don't think I could handle losing him.

@pelikila: ditto.
The other is someone hurting them. They do not want to see the ramifications of hurting my little girl. This little Asian fire cracker will f $hit up!

Losing her. Or that she'll end up a hating me and be a runaway and living on the streets.
pineapple / 12526 posts
The same actually.
I'm afraid that Im actually a terrible mom, that I'm doing lasting harm to her and that she's going to grow up into a dysfunctional teen/adult and resent me for the rest of her life.

@Smurfette: same as you. I'm scared I'm going to mess him up. At first academically, but then drugs or party too hard and then I'm scared he'll meet a real bitch of a girl and never want to talk to me or be around me when I get old.

@pelikila: @2PeasinaPod: @locavore_mama: @mrskc: @grizz: @MsLipGloss: Now I feel like a horrible parent cause losing her should be my biggest fear. I can't even imagine.

@Smurfette: I think it's probably just a given. Besides losing him, I fear that I will not raise him right.

@Smurfette: the only reason why it's always in the forefront of my mind now is because my ILs buried their son less than 3 years ago. So to me there is nothing worse. Everything else? They are still alive and living.

Losing him in general, but specifically if it was because of something I did (like forgetting he was in the car seat...)
pomelo / 5524 posts
@Smurfette: No...don't feel that way! I don't think anyone wants to even think about the possibility of that happening.
@FutureMrsMcK: YES...this! This is specifically my biggest fear. I had a total breakdown to DH about this and he laughed at me! Saying that I was ridiculous! I got so angry at him and told him that it was a real fear and it could happen to any of us. He changed his tune pretty quickly when he saw how upset it made me!

Losing her is definitely number one, but my greatest fear beyond that would be bullying. Kids are SO mean these days, how can i protect her from that? It breaks my heart thinking about it.

Definitely losing her. Tied with that is her losing me or my husband. That may sound selfish, but I lost my mom at 17 and I hate thinking that my daughter would have to go through major life events (graduations, college, marriage, babies, etc) without her mom or dad. I just want her to grow up with an intact family and not have to hurt so bad at such a young age.

@FutureMrsMcK: this is mine too. I don't even take my baby with me to work (like no daycare drop-off), and my heart still skips a beat every afternoon as I walk towards my car. That article that was circulating around last week really got me - I can't even imagine.

Having my child become seriously ill (whether physically, mentally, or emotionally) and not being able to fix it. I can't imagine seeing my child in pain day in and day out, and feeling totally helpless. I mean, obviously we'd get the best medical care possible, but still... I've always been afraid of this, but Mrs. Twine's recent blog post really made me start thinking about it again.

Not being able to help my lo when she needs it. (Like not being able to take away the pain of illness, not being able to stop teasing/bullying, etc.)

I'm terrified she's going to die, whether through my negligence (like drowning) or from an illness like leukemia. Its so, so scary.

The first is losing him, the second is him having similar issues to my brother and two of DH's brothers--depression, bipolar disorder, substance abuse, etc. We can love him as much as we possibly can and raise him perfectly, but our genetic combination could very well mean there are things about him that we could never prevent no matter what we did.

@FutureMrsMcK: Same. This terrifies me. I know I couldn't live with myself after.

That she will get sick and suffer a long time before she dies. I watched my mother go through a lot when my brother died and she says our family is cursed. My dad's mom, my mom, and my grandma all lost a child. Basically, I feel like I'm doomed to lose a child if i look at my family history and...yeah, i just can't think about it. I already find myself wondering if/when something will happen to her. How do you escape this kind of family history, ya know? It's just purely bad luck (car accidents, heart disease, etc)...but still. I hope i can avoid this family curse for reals.
Or that she gets on drugs and just really messes up her life for years and years. And that I mess her up real bad. I'm in therapy actually to break some family cycles.

Tbh I was kind of surprised by my first initial thought when considering the question & am positive that even a year ago my answer would be them dying.... Today though, my biggest fear is that my kids won't know who they are in Christ.
For me, how everything else goes is dependent solely on that.... Including them or myself/DH dying, my mistakes in parenting, their decisions on things like being mean or into drugs, etc.

I'm always scared of messing DS up...somehow he's managed to turn into a great kid.

I have a couple.
-him dying, I wouldn't be able to live without him. im sure of it.
-me royally screwing him up and he ends up like Charles Manson or something.
-Me or my hubby dying and having to live without a parent and all the sadness and baggage that comes with it
-him being bullied
- him being a bully (it would tear me apart and break my heart)
pineapple / 12802 posts
@yellowbird: ugh yea. Especially with online bullying. It all seems so much worse than when we were kids. I'm also scared he will BE the bully. That would break my heart.

I do worry about losing her. I cried a little this morning (I had been awake at work all night, I blame exhaustion) because she was at the babysitter's and I couldn't see her to make sure she was ok).
I also worry that I won't be as good of a mom to her as my mom is to me.

Losing her through an avoidable accident.
Being permanently injured through an accident, avoidable or otherwise.
Being a victim to a horrible crime. That last one just made me really sad
