What do you use? How did you choose? What do you like/dislike?
Currently using condoms. But Cobi is pretty much weaned, so I'm starting to consider something else.

Mini pill and condoms. My Dr told me to double up since I already had my period when I started the mini...it might not work for me.
I wish I could use a regular BCP but this is the only pill that is safe for breastfeeding.

Before I got pregnant this time (after E was born) we were NTNP. When we don't want to get pregnant we use NFP.

We're currently using condoms because I'm breastfeeding and I know one too many who got pregnant on the minipill. I just don't trust myself to take it at the exact same time every day when I'm sleep deprived and running ragged all the time. I plan to put in an IUD soon though because we are either done or don't plan to have another for a very very looooong time.
Before we got pregnant, we also used condoms just because I don't like the idea of hormonal BC in my system.

I voted other... pregnancy is a pretty good birth control. before that we were either NTNP or pregnant.
i've never taken BC!

I have an IUD. We're still in discussion about whether we want a second baby at all, but we definitely didn't want an oopsie baby because I forgot to take a pill or we forgot a condom/condom broke in the heat of the moment. We didn't want to rely on breastfeeding and natural family planning (especially since my sleep is so broken and sporadic), I had no interest in wearing a patch, and I've used Nuvaring in the past but (TMI) it slipped out more than once, so I didn't trust it.
I like the IUD because I seriously don't have to think about it at all. It did come with about 6 weeks of light on and off spotting, and I got my period this past month (but it was very light and only lasted 2 days). Insertation was easy-peasy. It hurt for a split second when they were dilating my cervix enough to insert it (literally less than 5 seconds) and I had some very mild cramping that day and or a day or two after.
I haven't had any negative side effects, although I have had a major uptick in migraines, but I don't know that I can necessarily attribute them to that....we're still trying to narrow down the cause. I haven't had any weight gain and my hormones are just as normal as ever.

I have a mirena IUD. My criteria for bc were something I couldn't mess up with and something that was uber-effective. I do NOT want any surprise babies!

@Mrs. High Heels: that's actually my hesitancy as well. I was on the lowest hormone dose bcp before TTC. But after minimal research I'm wary of a dose of hormones every day... Which is why I'm thinking maybe iud? But my aunt actually became infertile from hers (extremely rare- I know!), and that scares me!
@yoursilverlining: same. I do not want a surprise anytime soon!

Before we got pregnant, I was on the pill for 7 years. After this baby and between future pregnancies, we'll be using NFP. I haven't decided on birth control once we finish having children though. I'm pretty sure I don't want to use hormonal birth control again.
blogger / eggplant / 11551 posts
@Mrs. Pen: that's so scary, and so sad that it happened to your aunt. that's actually why i didn't do any BC's except condoms before getting pregnant with my first... i didn't want to risk something wonky happening to my system and me not being able to conceive. now it's a risk i'm a little more willing to take since i already have two kids.

@Mrs. High Heels: Gah, I have an alarm set to remind me about the pill and I still managed to forget 3 times last week. I will probably get an IUD in the future!

@runsyellowlites: Ditto...condoms and NFP.
I can't and won't use anything hormonal and although I've read some stuff recently that says IUDs don't worsen menstrual cramps, I've heard too many stories that they do and my cramps are too horrible for me to take that risk.

I got a Mirena IUD, and I really like it! I'll get it taken out in another year or so when we're thinking of TTC again. After baby #2 we'll be going for more permanent measures!

We are doing condoms only because we will be TTC again very soon, and my periods are regular for the first time in my life (a miracle after our struggle with PCOS and 90-100 day cycles). After our next baby I will likely get an IUD while we decide if we want to try for a 3rd. When we are done DH will get the ol' snip or I will be get a tubal.

Before I got pregnant we used a combo of condoms and NFP (though our baby is technically a surprise, so we weren't doing it perfectly!).
I was on the pill for about 8 years but got off of it because I had very little sex drive. I never had any other problems with it, though.

I really liked the mini pill when I was on it, I definitely prefer it to the regular pill. None of the side effects I'd had before I was pregnant, and I was already on a pretty low dose.

I used the mini pill, but just wanted to pipe up to say I HATED it. It turned me into someone else, not to mention killed my libido. After I'm done being pregnant with #2 I want to get an iud.

After feeling thrown around with the pill (disguised something that could have been resolved ages ago), we'll go back to using condoms once LO is born.

@lemondrop: you're the only one I've heard with something positive to say about the mini pill!

I mean, before getting pregnant (on purpose) we used condoms. It worked for us. And in the future if it doesn't work, I am pretty sure we would be okay with that.
pomelo / 5321 posts
After having DS, I was on the pill for almost a year. We've been using condoms only since July-August. Condoms have worked really well for us. DH likes to be rebellious and it resulted in a surprise baby! After this LO arrives, I'll probably do a combo of mini pill and condoms. I'm pretty sure we're two and through but I think we're too young to take any permanent measures.
nectarine / 2063 posts
We used NFP to get pregnant & plan on using it to avoid as well after Lo arrives. I've done pills, shots, rings, pills, condoms & hated them all.

Birth control pills. Hopefully, my cycle will regulate again when we try for #2 in the future.
cantaloupe / 6164 posts
I got the Mirena 2 months after Sadie was born. I spotted for a while & had a wonky period, but now I think I've regulated out. I really like that I don't have to remember to take a pill every day & I HATE CONDOMS. The amount of hormones released from the Mirena is minute, and I'm all about the no period thing.

Before we were married, we did birth control & then condoms (I needed to go off bc for my surgery & we never switched back). After we got married I got pregnant, and now we're NTNP, if anything.
bananas / 9628 posts
@Mrs. Pen: I didn't read all the comments yet, but there is a new lower dose iud by the makers of mirena. It is good for 3 years and approved for ppl who haven't had children, where mirena is recommended for only ppl who've had children (though plenty of childless ppl have them), so that would lead me to believe it's easier to put in, not sure though. It's called skyla.

@Penny Lane: Lol, I agree! Pregnancy is definitely a good form of birth control!
Before we got pregnant this time, we were just using condoms. I was on hormonal birth control for about 12 years and I think I'm done with it. I had really good experiences and loved the depo shot, but I don't know that I want to play around with all of that again. Condoms might be it for us from now on.

Pull 'n pray until M stops breastfeeding. Then I will go back on the patch.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
@photojane: I didn't like condoms at first... But it's nice having less mess haha!
@mrs. bird: I had no idea iud wasn't generally used by childless women! Is it because of potential infertility?
@Mrs. High Heels: I know. So it's hard to make the right decision. Since I just have J I don't want to do anything that would inhibited from more children. I'm open to a couple more kids further down the road, I'm only 23 right now so I have time. Although I really have it on my heart to adopt, I'm not sure we could ever afford it.

We are currently TTC but I had Mirena put in before we got married 3 years ago & just had it removed in April. My body cannot handle BC pills...crazy emotions & awful weight gain.
GOLD / wonderful grape / 20289 posts
I was always on seasonale. You get your period every 3 months instead of every month which is helpful for me because the hormones from my period always gives me bad migraines. So it means less migraines.
cantaloupe / 6730 posts
Before we were ready to TTC, we used a NFP/condom approach, after LO comes, we'll do the same. Since TTC we discovered that DH was on a medication that is a pretty effective birth control. So once we're done with kids, he'll go back in it.
kiwi / 673 posts
We use the sympto-thermal method of NFP (couple to couple league). We used it for 1.5 years before I got pregnant with LO and now we're using it again, My periods haven't returned yet so we're still on postpartum rules, but I can't wait until my normal charts are back. I really like that I can contact my instructor for a chart review at any time, and that they have a postpartum refresher class to specifically address that confusing time when you're not regularly cycling yet.

Currently TTC.
For 12 years though, birth control pills. I wish I had explored other options though because I feel like they did more harm than good (at least long-term).
