I heard from a friend that's due in a few weeks that she and her dh had to make a special request of shots they didn't want their baby to have right out of birth.
Another gf who's due next month says she goes with whatever they tell her because "they know what they're doing."
What are your thoughts? Did you get all shots or opt of some? Do hospitals/drs and their standard rec's including HepB shots make sense right after a baby is born?

We've decided to forgo HepB for... maybe a few years? We don't see any reason that a baby needs a vaccine for an STD. We're hoping to give Vitamin K by other means... either me taking a supplement or drops. As for other vaccines, we're going by the Dr. Sears schedule.

@c.sassy: my friend said the same thing, why would a newborn need a hepb shot? and then my other friend said she wants everything the doc recommends because the baby is around so many ppl the first few days...

@mrsjyw: She will be around a lot of people, but that's not going to change whether she's days old or years old. It's mainly recommended because it's so easily transmitted from mom to baby during birth. I'm 150% positive that it's not something I'll be passing on. There are a number of other things that went into our decision, but that's just way too much to put on here!

Our LO didn't get her hep vaccine at birth. The only thing she got were the drops in her eyes!

We did what our pediatrician recommended. We were questioning a lot of the shots when we met with her and I asked her what she did for her kids. She said she did all of the shots for her children. I asked her why and she said "If you've seen what I've seen during my residency, you wouldn't hesitiate to the give the shots either." Sold!

There are several drs in our immediate family and they strongly encouraged the vaccinations..so we went with that.

We went with the recommended shots. I figure they recommend them at the time they do for a specific reason.

@C.Sassy and @Mrsjyw I'm not a doctor now and was only a resident but I just wanted to let you know that Hep B is not only a sexually transmitted disease. You can get it from any bodily fluid and even from sharing toothbrushes and nail clippers and human bites (which babies and toddlers often do). If your child will be in the general public you really should consider it because it can have really dire lifelong affects for the liver including liver cancer. I was a resident for pediatric oncology so I take it very seriously. I just wanted to let you know that being transmitted sexually is only one way that someone can get Hep B but babies and children can certainly get it especially if they are in any kind of group atmosphere.

With my first child we followed the dr's shot schedule. With my second, we did only one shot at a time with at least one month between shots. With my third, we are delaying all vaccinations until six months of age and then we'll only do one shot at a time with at least one month between shots.

Just wanted to second @ecogirl 's comment... Hep B is not exclusively transmitted through sex or from mother-to-child and your child could contract it through contact with someone else (who may very well not know s/he is infected).

I planned to follow the standard vax schedule, so we decided to have the shots and drops at birth.
There's not a lot of choice in delaying where I live....the shots are the shots and you can't order ahead and get ones where they are separate. According to my doctor, spacing them out too much could lead to the shots being ineffective, which could mean more shots.

There is a ton of research and development that goes into determining appropriate dosage and scheduling of vaccinations, especially for children, and the recommended schedule is created to ensure safety and to maximize efficacy. In particular, spacing out a series of shots outside the recommended range can lead to decreased efficacy.

We will vaccinate on the doctor’s schedule and recommendation. They went to medical school, years of residency and practice medicine – I don’t. I think this is one of those issues where the expert knows best, over and over any “feelings” or “beliefs” I might have. (and my feelings on the subject are that vaccinations save lives and protect children).

I will also vaccinate per the public health standard recommendations. Here at birth they only do Vitamin K injection and erythromycin ointment to the eyes. Otherwise they do the rest at 2 months unless the Mom has risk factors.

we're going with the standard vaccinations. my sis in law is a pediatrician & feels very strongly about vaccinations. we trust her & her judgement & opinion, so we'll be doing what she recommends
@MrsBrewer: I would hope that it doesn't get to the point where the government is allowed to dictate that sort of thing - it's bad enough how involved they're getting in people's personal lives & decisions

@MrsBrewer: Although most (all?) public schools require vaccinations for enrollment, parents can opt out based on religious beliefs and a few other exceptions. Personally, I don’t think it should be that easy, but it is.

Just out of curiosity, what are the vaccinations your hospitals recommend at birth? I met our pediatrician yesterday and he gave us the vaccination schedule - the only vaccine at birth was Hep B, which we are planning on delaying.
