Today DS 15 days old had some traces of red blood in his stool earlier and again it was there tonight....
His poop is normal yellow and seedy not green or has any mucus, but some speaks and strings of blood?!
He has been breast fed and i pump
He also gets maybe 1-2 bottles of formula a day to supplement as he eats so much
Ped said that was OK could the formula be hurting him now?! He has drank at since birth and in NICU!?
Or something I ate?!

I'm sorry to hear that! My guess is that it could be a reaction to the dairy in formula. My LO didn't get green poop fora few months, but had blood right away.

Was he straining? Did you check his temp rectally recently? Bright red usually means "new" so it could be a small tear or scratch. My son had a few spots of red blood and I honestly think it was because the poop came right after he screamed for 45 minutes in the car- he was straining.
Anyway. Point is- as terrifying as it is one or two bits of blood isn't necessarily reason to freak out. But I'd definitely call your doctor and save the diaper because they may want to see it -
@FaithFertility: the milk proteins can also come through your bm, so you may need to cut out milk and soy as well. If you need to supplement, Allementium and Nutrimigen are typically better options

Unlikely to be an anal fissure at this age, though pretty early response on the protein intolerance spectrum (though I think that's likely it). Have you inspected her bottom? Taken any rectal temps lately? If not and all looks well I would switch to Alimentum or Nutramigen formula and cut dairy/soy from your diet for a few weeks, trial it back in maybe in a month? Sorry you're dealing with this!

My son had strings and specks of blood in his stool starting at 16 weeks. This was due to protein sensitivity which caused colitis. I had to go off dairy in my diet and supplemented later on with Alimentum.

Update: He was doing great and I was still supplementing as he still would not nurse and I would pump as much as I could get....(4-8 oz a day)
Fast forward to the past week and a half 7-8 weeks he took off with nursing and is doing great, so I nurse as much as possible 2-4 great sessions a day. Still supplementing as BM seems to not be enough or MOTN when he will not latch
The past 4-5 days he has only pooped once a day and for 2 days it is green and mucus...
He also is spitting up a little more
Isn't crying in discomfort but at times seems uncomfortable, grunting and kicks legs *gasCould he be only allergic to BM?? I would think if he had an allergy the formula would upset him also?
Calling Dr today to fill them in too, he has his 2 month apt next week! -
@FaithFertility: For a while J's poops would go back and forth between green/mucus-y and yellow/liquid-y. But for the past few days have been consistently yellow. I'm not as engorged as I was so I'm thinking it may have been a foremilk hind milk issue.

DD had that happen and I had to cut out dairy and it resolved
It sucked for me, but really made a big difference with her comfort.

@faithfertility that does seem weird, I have no idea if the milk proteins in formula breakdown differently than those in bm - we didn't use any formula. During the time all of this was going on, I also had a bit of an oversupply so I think the hindmilk/foremilk might have been out of balance too or even a fast letdown issue? Might be worth working with a lactation consultant Or just seeing if it's a one off thing and maybe it won't happen again?

That is how Ty's milk protein intolerance manifested. He had green mucousy stools flecked with blood until I cut dairy. I was unable to be perfect about it (and he wasn't nursing, I was just pumping), so I eventually switched him to nutramigen (where milk protein is broken down) at 4.5 months.

@FaithFertility: soy seemed fine for him. Ty didn't start having blood in his poo until 8 weeks, actually. I think it's common for the intolerance to present around then. I cut all major dairy and didn't eat stuff with butter or milk even baked into it. It was a major pain. Sorry you are dealing with this.

@winniebee: It is a pain! I am just so frustrated because I feel like BAM he starts to nurse better and this.....I am educated in this thanks to you all in HB so I knew this isn't normal! Dr. seems to think it is, but I don't think so.....
I am going to cut the dairy as I want to nurse him or at least get him BM as long as I am not working, because I have a feeling if he still isn't the best nurser and my supply when I pump is garbage we will be EFF by March!
That formula is Pricey so I am hoping my BIL who is a PEDI in Tampa can get me a few samples to try first!

@FaithFertility: You can try soy milk! Whole foods have tons of dairy free products as well. If it is truly a milk protein intolerance, your pediatrician can write a letter to your insurance company. I had to fight a little, but it was covered by insurance for T..

@FaithFertility: I would recommend cutting out soy too--about half the babies who are intolerant to dairy are also intolerant to soy. Try almond or rice *milk.* I know it really sucks, especially around the holidays . . . I am currently dairy, soy, wheat, egg, and nut free, so I am right there with you!

@FaithFertility: Almond milk is actually quite good. I used to eat it in my cereal and make almond milk pancakes that the boys liked!
It sucked for me, but really made a big difference with her comfort.
