Blue Apron or Plated- Meal delivery?

So we finished our first week of Plated and I was not that impressed. The pork and tuna dishes was just okay. Side dishes were kinda awful. (We had quinoa for the first time and DH said it was the worst thing he has ever eaten...lol! Is quinoa suppose to taste bitter? I think the recipe just flopped. ) Oh, one of the pieces of pork had brown spots and smelled bad compared to the other piece. DH googled it and decided not to cook it. When I emailed Plated and asked what they could do. They said that it was normal (the smell). When I said there was brown spots, they apologized but still didn't offer any type of credit. I paid $12 per plate, so if I can't eat half my meal, I expect to be compensated! If I don't get something in return soon, I think I'm going to have to post something on their FB wall. The one good meal this week was the steak dish. That is one dish that the DH said he would like to make again.

We got another box this Saturday (I bought this box and the last box at the same time), maybe this week will be different.

Not that happy with Plated, right now. Although, Blue Apron didn't have the choices that Plated did, I am more happy with Blue Apron's recipes and customer service.

@TemperanceBrennan: Do you find that using Fresh20 saves you money? I feel like I spend a fortune on groceries every week, even though I make a list using Ziplist recipes.

@meredithNYC: Yeah, Blue Apron's packaging wasn't as environmently friendly as Plated. Plated used biodegradable bags, at least. Though overall, there was still a lot of packaging that needed to be thrown away. But if you were go to grocery shopping, wouldn't you have packaging to throw out, too? Plated, at least combined foods together to reduce packaging. Maybe we should suggest Blue Apron do the same.

We got the "free" meals from Plated and they are okay... if I had paid $15 a plate for those I would have been PISSED. We got 4 meals (2 for each person) and it would have run us around $80 with shipping if we paid paid full price, so I guess that would make them more like $20 a plate for some pretty meh food. I like the concept but the price for what you get is just ridiculous.

I would maybe understand if it had recipes or ingredients that were hard/difficult to find but honestly, I could make everything they offer myself from supplies at Kroger.... and for cheaper.

We really like blue apron! It keeps us out of cooking ruts of making the same things all the time

@TemperanceBrennan: Oh, wait. I see someone opened a Fresh 20 thread. I put my question over there so as not to highjack this thread.

@littlebug: Yes, and No. We spent so much on groceries before, it was embarrassing - and we ate out often so on top of that, we wasted a ton of food. I didn't meal plan, and if I wanted to make a recipe, I would buy a ton of food and only use a portion of it.

So, the Fresh 20 has saved us a lot of money, but it's not necessarily cheap. We buy a lot of organic stuff so that makes it more expensive too. There is usually some sort of seafood every week that can get expensive - one week it was lobster tails! But you can always substitute for a different protein.

There is an estimate each week for the cost of groceries. The past few weeks have been: $80, $72.50, $78.50, $82, $71.50, $76.50. This is just for the 5 planned dinners. It makes enough food for lunches for us too. We usually spend $100-$130 per week on groceries that include drinks, breakfasts, pantry items, and snacks too. It fits in our budget, so I'm happy with it. If you shop sales, conventionally grown produce/meats, and stock up on proteins during sales you could save more.

@TemperanceBrennan: Oh my gosh, $82 (obviously plus a few other items) would be a dream! Thanks for that breakdown! I'll have to give it a try with their free week promo.

@bluestriped bee: Yeah, I mean, I don't think there's any way around it, unfortunately, since food needs to be kept at the right temp, etc. Ultimately, I just decided that going to the store is better for us with reusable bags and all. I'm also one of those weirdos who doesn't put fruit/veg in the plastic bags unless absolutely necessary.
