Thanks everyone. I just got off the phone with the nurse and I'm shaking, I'm so angry and upset. But they explained that the lab didn't get the urine until Tuesday morning, so technically 48 hours means sometime today.
She's going to talk to the NP we saw on Monday and call me back.

@mrs. wagon: my friend who is an ER ped told me when I had a bladder infection while pregnant to go to the ER because they can rush lab work. I'm not familiar with identifying how long it takes to identify cultures but if you don't get results today maybe you can ask your ped if it would be faster to go to the ER

Thanks everyone. Still waiting for the call back. At least the nurse was kind. But the timing of it all (considering she is a 10 month old baby) is really upsetting. When I hear that I'll know results of a urine culture in 24-48 hours on Monday morning (AND we got a call confirming that there was bacteria growing, so obviously the hospital HAD the urine culture going starting Tuesday morning) I expect the results within the 24-48 hour window. Not AFTER the 48 hour window has passed.

@bunnylove08: I have been thinking this since last night. While I don't want to be sitting in an ER for hours with a feverish baby, if I had known it would take this long I probably would have done that. But all I'm hearing from the ped office is that the results will come back "some time today". So obviously taking her to the ER today is probably wasted time for all of us. And getting her cathed was not a fun process either... don't want to put her through that again if not necessary. If I take her to the ER this morning, a 24 hour rush culture wouldn't be back til tomorrow. Ugh.

@mrs. wagon: You don't want to go to the ED unless she is acting like she was last night, just because they won't have culture results back any sooner.
Alright, time for me to discharge myself from the hospital! Long night!

@mrs. wagon: sounds SO scary hope you get results back sooner than you expect, that stinks about the wait.

thanks guys. Just a little update that we're taking her in for an antibiotic shot to get her jump-started on the new antibiotic, then we'll go home with the prescription to give her orally. They have a suspicion but no final confirmation from the lab yet (but are "expediting" it... uh, AFTER the 48 hour window?) but are confident they'll have it by the time we get there with her.
According to our nanny, she's at home happy as ever and just went down for her morning nap. She's my star...

Just got a pic of LMW on the way to the doctor's. A shot from Wagon Sr.'s phone of the backseat mirror. Check out that smile on my star...

So scary! I'm really hoping your little cutie patootie feels better soon and they figure out exactly what's the culprit.
I had a similar scare when DD suddenly went limp in my arms a few hours after her immunizations. She was literally playing and wiggling one minute, and the next she screamed and suddenly went limp. It scared the living crap out of me!

@mrs. wagon: she is so cute!!! Hoping the antibiotics work quickly!
@Crumbs: that's terrifying. What happened? Was it just a bad reaction from them?

@mrs. wagon: @TurtleDoves: @HLK208: All I remember was my heart sank and I stood around cradling her and going crazy inside. I immediately checked her temp and she spiked a fever. The scariest thing is we didn't have fever meds and it was after hours so all the pharmacies were closed. I did have some Children's Tylenol from when I last visited my mom, but she was too young to take it.
I fed her, and watched her like a hawk all night, I don't think I slept. But thankfully her fever didn't stay long. Yeh, we totally learned out lesson and have a few fever reducers in the house.

@Crumbs: that is officially the most terrifying story I've heard in a long time. so glad it went away quickly.
Just got this picture texted to me with the message "30 sec after shot". My hubby and kid are so CUTE.

Heehee... thanks all.
Just got off the phone with Wagon Sr. with the update. She did great with her shot and her fever is ALL the way down with the ibuprofen she took this morning, so that's good to know.
So the bacteria growing in her urine is an antibiotic-resistant e.coli. Just what every mother wants to hear is growing in their baby's bladder. Antibiotic-resistant sounds really scary, but all that really means is that it's resistant to most commonly given antibiotics, including the bactrim she was getting. So she's on CEPH now, and that should kill it along with the fever. She's gonna be on it for 2 weeks, and it will probably give her some tummy issues (she's already having very runny stools from the original antibiotics) so we're gonna pick up some probiotics tonight to mix into her yogurt.
My poor baby. We're also going to look into the possibility that she has reflux, in that urine is refluxing back up into her kidneys. It's not uncommon, and this issue usually resolves itself, but might as well get it checked out. The NP we saw suspects she has this and suggested just getting a consult from a urologist, just in case.

@mrs. wagon: I'm glad it looks like things are finally getting figured out!
A co-workers son recently had a similar issue. Initially thought it was a UTI but it developed into a kidney infection and renal reflux from E. coli. He was in and out of the hospital the entire time. Once they finally figured out what was going on his fever stayed down and he got better quickly.

Poor thing! At least you know what it is now and can treat it. Hope your whole family is feeling better soon!
blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts
@anbanan15: exactly this... the NP said that since we caught it so early (we brought her in the first day of her fever, and that's when the urine culture was started) as long as we get the consult from the urologist we should be able to avoid any scary situations like this.
grapefruit / 4681 posts
@mrs. wagon: Good! I hope you don't have go wait too long for the urologist consult.

so glad she is ok. We had to get my DD checked out for reflux when she was 5 months old and had a UTI. Make sure she goes to a place that is a pro at catheterizing babies! It was horrible.. we had 2 nurses try and catheterize her and she was hysterical. I should have just gone to the Children's Hopsital like my gut was telling me instead of the local hospital.
blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts
@T-Mom: ugh. That's so horrible. Luckily the NP was able to cath LMW on the second try (and the first try was super quick) and even though she was screaming, she was fine afterwards. Sigh.

@mrs. wagon: oh my! glad to hear everything will be ok. how scary!
LMW and your DH have the exact same expression in that pic! SO cute!!

@mrs. wagon: oh my gosh, I'm so glad you have a diagnosis & a plan!! Please keep us updated. I've been thinking of LMW!

@mrs. wagon: I hope she doesn't have reflux! My niece did have this (diagnosed after recurrent UTIs and fevers) and had surgery at the Childrens when she was 1. She did great and has been fine ever since. So, the outcomes are very good even if she does have reflux.
