Hello! Like many of you I am feeling pretty upset today. But I thought that one thing I want to make sure I do is raise my kiddos to be tolerant. I was wondering if any of you had suggestions for children's books that talk about diversity, acceptance, tolerance, love? I ours love to add some to my kiddos library.

Sometimes just reading books that feature characters that are not the same race as the reader normalizes that all races have a place in society.
Ezra Jack Keats has a series of books featuring a black child named Peter.
"Corduroy Bear" is about a deptarment store bear and a black girl that wants the bear.

We really like the book "And Tango Makes Three" about two male penguins at the zoo who love each other, but don't have an egg like the other penguin mates. So a zookeeper brings them egg to take care of so they can have a baby, too.

The Last Stop on Market Street. 2016 Newberry Medal winner and Caldecott Honor recipient. Beautiful story about a little black boy and his grandmother who ride the city bus all the way to the end of the line to volunteer at the soup kitchen.

Following! I also would love recommendations for picture books with minority characters. LO is only 2 but looooooves books and I want to keep her exposure diverse. Already added a bunch of the above to her list

Here are a couple books with Filipino-American protagonists: Cora Cooks Pancit, Lakas and the Manilatown Fish, Lakas and the Makibaka Hotel. I love reading A is for Activist to my babies too. I plan on purchasing Counting on Community soon.

Not specifically about diversity, but historical females. We just read this one recently as my girl checked it out from the library. We spent a lot of time talking about Rosa Parks and what she did.

@Miss Flamingo: I'm sad today too, and I had the exact same thought - how can I raise my kids to know there is better in the world. Thank you for this thread. I'll be looking for some of these books as well.

My classroom won a grant a couple of years ago so I have dozens. I'll go through them at work tomorrow and pull a few good titles (for me as much as you).

We love Max and the Tag Along Moon. More along the lines of what @Mrs. Lemon-Lime is talking about - a book with a POC protagonist - not necessarily about diversity in the plot.
Also my favorite books with strong female characters that's not about girl power per se are:
