As a sociology major, and former "tomboy", I find myself fascinated by gender and kids... so this was interesting!
I think the most valuable bits for me were at the end - talking about just switching the gender binary is reinforcing it all the same.
Anyone else have thoughts on it? It was buzzing around my alumni FB page for a while back.

I think this is fascinating! I liked when she was talking about how us surrounding our kids with gendered items influencing their brain development. I think that makes sense.
C wears pink and such but we are making an effort not to enforce gender stereotypes on her behaviors (ie. you're a girl, girls cant play guitar, etc). I will be happy as long as she is, at least, accepting and tolerant of other people's differing gender identities.

@zippylef: I totally agree. I don't care what O is into, as long as she doesn't bully or hurt anyone else for their own choices.
I sometimes think that by going overboard talking about genders, we do reinforce the stereotypes we're trying to ignore. Like, my brother liked my dolls when he was a toddler, so Santa brought him two of his own. But by telling that story, we're almost reinforcing information that even though he is a boy, he still could play with dolls (implying that dolls are inherently a "girl" toy). So confusing!

@zippylef: I think the fact that you as her parent acknowledge that different gender identities exist, makes it more likely that she is/will be 
@sorrycharlie: I disagree that it's "going overboard" by discussing gender - but I know what you mean, that's what stuck out to me most too that doing something that seems to be going against the pink/blue tidal wave actually just feeds into it.

It's a good talk, but it didn't really say much to me about solutions. I appreciate the comment about reinforcing the binary, though. I guess I wanted her to dig deeper.

@Mrs. Jacks: I agree, but I wasn't sure how much of that was because I already seek out articles/work done on gender. I went to her blog/website and it seemed mostly like links to other articles. I wish I still had access to research databases to see some of the work she has (presumably) published on the topic!

@sorrycharlie: I agree . . . by trying not to make a big deal out of something it, in fact, becomes a big deal. *sigh*

The end of the talk was a little better but I just kept thinking whoa, this lady is making way too big of a deal out of pink and blue. But I do agree that trying to push only the 'opposite gender things' on kids just reinforces stigmas.
