My husband takes our lo to McDonalds as his daddy daughter treat every few weeks. When they go, she gets a happy meal. The first time they went the girl toys were hideous, they seemed to be for older kids. So, since then, he has gotten her the boy toys. And let me tell you, the boy toys are so much more fun! (Unless they're my little pony, then she gets a girl toy).
Anyone else switch up the gender with happy meal toys?

We do Mickey D’s as a special treat too, and I pick the toy based on what looks better. A bit ago they had those skankilicious Monster High dolls for girls, and sorry, but HELL to the NO. So, that was definitely a “boy toy” visit.
I do appreciate when they ask what toy I want, rather than “boy or girl”. That’s rare though.

No kids yet, but when I was little I always asked for the boy toys. Usually they had wheels or spun or just did something more exciting than the girl toys.

Yep. Last time we were there the boy toy was some dart shooting thing that DS would have immediately lost or broken so we got the girl toy, but I have no memory of what it was. He liked it though!

We usually get the boy toy. I ask wheat they are first... Sometimes that means we get both.

@yoursilverlining: I know - those were awful. I just pick whichever is cooler for my girl. If the girl you is awful, she gets the boy one.

At our particular McDonalds (that sounds like we are regulars, lol), they display the toys in one of those cases and my son decides based on which toys he likes. The recent choice between Monster Jam trucks and Hello Kitty art supplies was tough though, I have to say.

When I buy them for myself I get the boy toy. I agree that the boy toy is usually better. Although the toy does wind up as a cat toy or thrown away pretty quickly.

I worked at McDonalds and so, so many little girls got boy toys... to the point we always had boxes leftover of girls toys.

We would get whatever looks better but usually we just end up saying girl and having no idea what the toys are ahead of time. I agree some have been terrible though! But we aren't regular McDonald's people, we actually don't live super close to one!

why do they have to designate between boy or girl toys? not to be THAT poster, but couldn't they just say, we have toy A and toy B and let kids choose that way? seems unnecessary.

@megjay18: "back in the day" they used to have gender neutral toys. They used to give out glasses and hello - nugget people!! My best friend kept a bunch of her old McDonald's toys from the 80's.

@mediagirl: sometimes stuff like this just makes me angry. i used to work for someone who allowed "male" outings and "female" outings. the guys went to a cabin overnight, smoked cigar and drank whiskey around a bonfire. the girls got a manicure over the lunch break. personally, i'm more about whiskey than nail polish. so i guess my point is, have things that may be considered separated by gender (ie princess toys or cars), but just say "would you like a princess or car?" instead of "boy or girl toy". if my boss hadn't designated the outings male or female, i wouldn't have been nearly as angry... i'd also have whiskey

@megjay18: i completely agree with you. that;s why i opened this thread, lol. The first time i got a happy meal at McDs a few months ago and the cashier asked me "boy or girl", i was confused and then annoyed. I just make sure to switch it up each time I go but it's still annoying that they ask. Maybe one day i will respond, "kid"

@megjay18: totally hear your rant. I wish for the 80's toys of old when it was just one toy and they had like 10 weeks of amazing toys. Now it's all crap. Except My Little Ponies. Those are okay. lol

@megjay18: @californiadreams: I totally understand and agree - I've had several locations/employees ask which toy, instead of girl/boy, which is nice. I don't think they are told to ask boy/girl, I think that's probably just quicker/easier. But yeah, gendered stuff bugs.
The Hello Kitty art stuff is pretty good - my LO got a little HK hard plastic case while we were on vacation that's the perfect size for keeping little things in. Since my LO is a hoarder, it's ideal for her to have a "suitcase" to carry around all her crap, I mean, treasures

@megjay18: I completely agree and was thinking the same thing. I hate that one day my child will have to say they want a toy meant for someone of the opposite gender.

@yoursilverlining: You are actually trained to say "would you like a princess or car?" but then 20% of people ask "what's the difference" or "what's a princess" or say princess and meant car and get upset because they already opened the little bag so now they can't exchange the toy. The people that ask by toy name are a lot more patient than I ever was!
