We are buying shoes for a 15 year old girl through Angel Tree. It's a very practical gift but I'd like to get a ''cool'' brand so the little girl can feel that they are special. I'd buy a practical sneaker type show and something less practical like Toms or flip flops. What's cool these days?

Converse for sure! If you want an even more practical sneaker, then I vote nikes or new balance trainers

@JCCovi: my niece is 12 and even though her wardrobe isn't loud, she prefers color and loud converse.

@JCCovi: I teach 11-14 year olds, so a bit younger but the furry boots are still all the rage for the girls. Not just in winter. They wear them Sept-May practically. Even with shorts!

What about a retro styled sneaker? Like a retro styled classic New Balance? It'll be a cute, more quality shoe. Otherwise classic low black and white Converse, you can't go wrong.

So interesting so many people are suggesting Converse! My husband and I wear those ourselves, but the girls in my school don't at all (well, let's say 98% don't). It's more of a hipster look and I guess the kiddos at my school are a lot more...I don't know, typical Americana? And my niece who is almost 15 doesn't wear chucks, either. She lives in the south, but mainly wears regular unfashionable tennis shoes, ballet flats, or flip flops. Sometimes knee high boots.
