So we bought a breathable bumper for the crib, but I'm not sure if I like the fit. The front of our crib is solid, and we have it at the highest setting since our LO is only 3 months old. The problem is, we can't tie the top part of the bumper to the front of the crib, so it gaps. Do I have to wait to use the bumper until we have the crib at a lower setting?
I put LO in the crib to show size, she doesn't sleep in here yet

We had a similar problem when we tried to use a breathable bumper in our crib because ours has solid sides. We ended up returning it and just started using a regular bumper once LO was really mobile (around 8 months).

We never used one. I think he got a leg stuck one time and was just scared, not hurt.

Are the strings long enough so you can tie it at all to the slats below the top? (it looks like the tails show through in the top photo)

@MrsBrewer: does he know even the breathable ones aren't recommended by the aap? Especially if they have ties instead of just the Velcro, they are considered a strangulation risk.

That doesn't look safe if LO can move. Why do you feel you need a bumper? We skipped them, Dd moves tons and has only needed rescued twice for a stuck leg. She's bashed her head a few times falling over and lived to tell the tale. I wouldn't use it.

@MrsBrewer: If they're loosely tied, I figured maybe they won't be too bunchy? Like only knotting the very ends to pull them back.
But like others, I don't really see a need for it. We got a borrowed cradle that came with a bumper and I thought that was really odd. If a kid is in a cradle, are they moving so much they need a bumper??

@kiddosc: yea I told him, but I don't really feel that strongly against them truthfully. Call me a bad parent I guess. I would rather have her keep sleeping, than to have her arm or leg get through a slat and wake her up. I'm not saying I'm not concerned about the strangulation, but I feel if I use the bumper correctly, there aren't as many risks.

I would not recommend use of a bumper at all. But given your stance that there aren't as many risks if used correctly I definitely wouldn't use it until the mattress is lowered and you can secure all ties. The current set up is definitely not the correct use.

@MrsBrewer: I hear you. I'm not calling you a bad parent, just thought I'd throw out some info to tell your DH if you weren't really into the bumper. Can you just lower the mattress so you can secure the bumper correctly? Nothing says it needs to be up so high for an infant.

@MrsBrewer: gotcha! Not bashing your choice to use a bumper. I'm sure since you're on here asking, you're aware of the risks and what not. In that case, I'd maybe just hold off until you can tie the front side so that there isn't a gap. Can you just lower the crib mattress down a notch now? They really grow so fast anyway.

@MrsBrewer: Can you pull the bumper down past the mattress so that it's half covering the mattress and half covering the slats? That's what we did in the crib!

Would your DH be willing to see if a bumper is "needed" rather than starting out with one? LO only needed rescuing from a stuck limb once - and one of her soothing techniques is actually to stick her legs out of the slats and bat them around (she's weird). Bumpers have scary risks!

I would wait until she is actually moving. The way it is now looks pretty dangerous, and she won't be moving enough to need a bumper for a while. At that point you will prob want to lower the crib anyway, but why make things more difficult (lower crib with short arms) before you need to?
That said, I agree you really may not need it at all. I did not get one but would have investigated a breathable bumper if we needed one, but it literally didn't come up once. And my kid used to scoot around the crib a lot.

Alternatively, you could consider a different style. I'm not sure if you'd still have the same issue. We have this one and I don't think it comes up as high above the mattress.
