Ours was pretty easy! DH went and got him from my parents, took him in (I was up on my bed with LO) and let him out to pee, etc. Then the dog came up on his own and sniffed from the end of the bed, and that was that. Lol! My mom took a blanket from the hospital from him to sniff there but reported that he didn't care.

@ladyfingers: yeah I was nervous about my dog too because as a sheltie he's kinda excitable and also OCD, lol. But he surprised me - he laid wherever she was (on the floor near swing, me, bassinet) but didn't show any other interest til 2 months or so. Also, my dog doesn't get on the furniture (he's way too shed-y!!) so he's never really been close to her, aside from sniffing when she's on our laps

I was super nervous about the animal/LO introduction. We had my parents staying at our place while I was in the hospital and they gave her a huge run before we came home. They brought home a baby hat the night before and let her sniff it while getting cookies. Day of we introduced baby and pup on "neutral" ground aka at the park so that the dog didn't feel territorial about us bringing something new into her space without her approval. (We thought about this process a lot) overall I'm amazed at how easy it's been. The dog alerts me to poopy diapers and will sit quietly and keep guard over the sleeping baby.
As long as you go slow, the transition will be fine.

I wondered how it would go, and it was just fine. My dogs are wonderful with her. They're both large breed dogs, totally huge, and they're so gentle with her. She loves them.

@.twist.: Our cat was/ is my baby too She is only a year old and is still very playful, she thinks she is one of the dogs really. The cat never use to cuddle or really let you hold her much but she still was very friendly. But now she watches over the baby like a hawk. She is constantly in the nursery and we have to bribe her with treats to get her out. Now at night she come and cuddles with me in bed and she will let me hold her to cuddle when I have time. I have to be totally honest though, she is still my main concern when it comes to the safety of the baby (that stupid crap you hear about a cat suffocating a baby), cause I have found her in the crib when the baby was not in it and her new favorite place is the changing table pad. So we do keep a really close eye on her and we always make sure she is not in the nursery before we close the door. But she has been very good. She comes by the bouncy seat to smell the baby but thats about it.
