We use a lot of citronella candles and this coil thingy that burns. I light the candles about 30 minutes before we go out.

They are enormously expensive. But mosquitos are no joke here. And we live next to a stream. Completely worth it to avoid DEET and be able to enjoy being outside.

We use the candles, tiki torches and then we spray the yard every month with yard spray that hooks up to the hose, it works wonders! We also use bug spray.

No one uses those bug zappers any more? I was just browsing some options and these seemed to be reasonably affordable.

So I use something that eventually kills off mosquitoes in your area called a mosquito deleter. Supposedly mosquitoes only travel like 25 ft so you set them around your perimeter to maximize coverage. The way it works is that you make the water in the container "stale" for the mosquitoes. They use the water to spawn, but the design traps them and the larvae never get to leave the water and eventually die. Eventually you kill out the mosquitoes in that area. It's actually pretty gross once you start seeing the little worm type things swimming around in there but I haven't gotten bit in and around my house in 2 years. I leave them out once it starts getting warm. If you throw out the water, remember not to just dump it anywhere because some of the larvae may still be alive. I throw mine down the toilet. I add more water, pop in some "conditioning" pills to help make the water stale (it comes with the kit). I barely change the water, the older it is the better. But I do replace it when it rains.

We make sure to empty anything that has standing water, like the water table or baby pool. It's enticing to leave them filled overnight for another use, but... no chances! West Nile was in our county last summer and we took the threat seriously!
