I don't think it makes a difference to be honest. For me it was more about what kind of cake I wanted my one year old to eat. I was less concerned about how it would look in pictures! For DD1 I baked a black bean "chocolate" cake - it tasted better than it sounds! For DD2 I'm baking Sarah Crowder's healthy smash cake which is essentially a banana cake with no added refined sugars. She uses maple syrup as a sweetener and I have all natural at home.

DD1 face planted into her smash cake; it was epically hilarious. Can't wait to see what DD2 does tomorrow.

Just not chocolate, or blue icing. No offense to anyone who had used chocolate but it doesn't look very nice in (professional) pictures.

My son was totally uninterested in his cake. It was a let down. Lol

@Freckles: haha I didn't actually give chocolate. It was made out of black beans and tasted like chocolate. I didn't do a pro shoot, just pictures during her party. I didn't think the chocolate was a big dea.

@BandDmommy: the only way we got my kid to eat her cake was decorate it with blueberries, her favorite thing at the time. She was just picking the healthy blueberries off the frosting while I tried to force her to eat cake.

Our photographer said that 75% of kids don't go for it! But she said to use bright colored frosting.

@Mrs.Someone: haha yes, both my girls are foodaholics. Like you can't eat without them grabbing your food. Dd1 face planted into her cake which was hilarious. dD2 immediately went for it but she didn't get IN to it like big sister. She just kept grabbing frosting off it. But when I was holding her later to put it away she went to grab for it again. LOL
