I think the doljabi is such an adorable and fun tradition for birthdays! I want to do one with my son for his first in 8 weeks (!!), but I worry that since I'm not Korean I can't... Can I? I wouldn't want to offend anyone by stealing their native traditions.

What are you going to do? The clothes, the food, the "objects" tradition? I'm Vietnamese and we'll be doing a "toi noi" which has the objects for the baby to pick, too.

We're not Korean and we did it - well just the fortune telling part - we didn't have a big party or wore traditional garments. I don't think my Korean friends were offended at all when we told them.

@Mrs. Pen: They do the object choosing in Eastern Europe too, at least in Albania where I lived it was common. I think it's a part of MANY cultures, so I think you're safe doing it.

I think you should! We aren't Korean but my MIL bought a bunch of objects for LO to choose from!

My husband is South Asian (think indian subcontinent countries, not eastern asian), and they do this in their culture, too.

@Mrs. Pen: Haha, you are not alone! I want to do something like that picture and maybe set out 4 bowls and have people guess which she will pick, then draw a name out of the "winning" bowl and give that person a small gift. I think it would be fun to make it like a party game.

@Mrs. Pen: Yep, I think we're going pretty and sweet and doing the vinatgey pink/lace/burlap theme.
My pinterest board is getting ridiculous. lol. We're going to be in full-on planning mode after I fly home.

@Mrs. Pen: I think we're going to do C's at our house. Venues are hard to come by in England and the ones on the base are not very nice. I just hope it's not super cold! I wish her birthday was in the summer.
