This might be a dumb question but I know you ladies will help me
I'm worried about eating sandwiches with deli meats while pregnant because of the listeria concern. Is it safe to eat a Vietnamese banh mi sandwich? I'm craving one!

As long as deli meat is hot it's ok. Can you microwave or press it?

I've been craving one too!
I'm pretty sure you can get them without the pate, but I think most of them have deli meats. You may be able to get a vegetarian one. I've seen a lot of recipes online for banh mi with ground pork patties so maybe you could make your own?

I didn't eat the traditional one with the pate and deli meats. But now they have all kinds of different ones but I assume you mean the traditional one?

Thanks, ladies. Yes, I mean the traditional ones that I've been craving so maybe I'll ask them to leave the pate out and stick the meat in the microwave for me or I'll take it home and microwave the meat and put it back in before I eat it! Yummmmm.....

I was told deli meats have to heated til they are steaming hot if you want to eat them whilst pregnant

This is my current number one on my to-eat list after giving birth. I've tried the other sandwiches with the chicken or the charbroiled pork but it's definitely NOT the same as the one with the deli meats and pate. mmm my mouth waters just thinking about it!

Yum! Omit the pate & make sure to heat up the deli meat. That sounds delicious! A Banh Mi shop just opened up in town, and I wish I could try one. Unfortunately my LO is allergic to wheat.

If you're really craving one, get the bbq meat (thit nuong) or meatballs (xiu mai). They still have the picked veggies and mayo.

Yum! I ate tons of them early on in pregnancy, I just always put it in the oven to heat it up.

I was bad two weeks ago, and ate one. I did feel a tiny bit guilty but it was delicious!

I ate them all the time in my third trimester.

I asked my OB about deli meats, and he said don't worry about it. His argument was that you can get listeria from basically anything (cantelopes a few months back?) and you don't hear anyone pulling that stuff off the safe during pregnancy list. I say go for it

i'm not even really sure what bahn mi is but if it's vietnamese, i'm craving it! not really sure what pate is either but some sorta paste? i heard you're not supposed to eat pate.
mmm. i want some vietnamese. too bad it's a good half hour for me to pick some up.

I was craving bahn mi the other day, too! I ended up ordering a grilled shrimp bahn mi. It was sooo goood. A good number of places around me offer grilled or bbq meats and vegetarian/tofu options. I think as long as you get something heated and/or without the pate, you should be fine.

I second what @prettylizy's doc said. You can get listeria from pretty much anything and people are way too freaked out about it these days (in my opinion). If you are getting things from clean, reputable, high quality places I wouldn't worry too much- but it's a personal call.

I never realized the original kind had pate. I always get the veggie or charbroiled chicken, and they're perfectly safe. But I totally crave them too!

@MegWag: I agree with you and @PrettyLizy. My OB just advised getting deli meats (well, all meats, as I still eat my steak rare) from clean, reputable sources - which we should do any way, pregnant or not

@yoursilverlining: No kidding, I don't want listeria ever, pregnant or not! lol!

I ate them minus pate and deli meat (with roast pork) throughout both my pregnancies. I had deli meat occasionally as well.

I also asked my ob about deli meats and he said they were fine. His only suggestion was for all cold foods and it was to make sure that it stays cold. He said if I'm packing it for lunch make sure I either pack an extra ice pack or put it directly into a refrigerator. He said the only real risk comes when something that should be cold is allowed to sit out and get warm. Then bad things start growing.
