Usually my inseam isn't available in stores... my height is more in my torso than my legs. All that hemming makes shopping a hassle, so I rarely do it.
Can you buy clothes off the rack that fit? Or do you need additional tailoring?

I feel kind of dumb asking... if you don't buy clothes off the rack... how do you buy clothes?
I totally buy clothes off the rack and then tailor it if I need to... but I go to a lot discount stores... so it's kind of assumed I will do that anyways.

@Raindrop: sorry I meant, can you wear clothes right off the rack! Amended the question to clarify...
I buy pants off the rack, then take them to tailor to be hemmed.

I'm short and petite so pants & sleeves are usually too long but dresses, short-sleeves, sleeveless, etc usually fit.

It is a total pain for me but with enough hunting I can usually find things. I can't just walk into Target and grab a pair of pants on a whim though.

@Raindrop: we can't buy dress clothes for mr. bird off the rack so we have to custom order them. it's a pain.
some brands fit better than others.
@mrbee: i don't know what kind of pants you're shopping for, but lands end will send you pretty much any inseam length you could need! they have them in 1/4" increments starting at 26"

i am short so i only shop petites so that i don't have to get things altered. i am too lazy for alterations. also i'm not a huge shopper, and limiting things to just the petite section makes life easier.

@mrbee: Ah okay. Well I was getting my wedding dress... there was a person that would make it to fit and designed for my body and such (very expensive so I didn't do)... I thought maybe that was what you meant.

@mrs. bird: yeah I thought that could be it... one of my co-workers gets custom shirts from nordstrums and I didn't even know they did that!

I always need to get my pants hemmed. Occasionally I will hem dresses. If I buy mini-skirts they usually fit me at a good length since I'm so short! But if they are knee length, they will be far too long.
I don't usually need to get tops tailored though.
PS. This is why I love shopping at Nordstrom with my Nordstrom card. Free alterations budget every year!!!!

I'm pretty fortunate in that I hardly ever need alterations. Even my wedding dress fit pretty well off-the-rack.

I can, at certain stores and in certain brands. Most of my pants need to be hemmed, unless they happen to be crops.

@Raindrop: there are a few stores that offer free alterations, but we're poor so we order them from india (studiosuits.com). the shirts really aren't any more than what you'd pay in a department store for a men's shirt & they're prefect! just have to allow plenty of time

Yea. They offer various lengths in pants so the Short or Petite size fits me. Regular length is way too long and I rather no buy the pants then spend money on tailoring since it's expensive.

I never used to find pants long enough, but there has been a surge in brands offering longer inseams so it makes it a lot easier. Though many still only offer them online. I have a hard time buying my clothes online because I never know if they'll fit.

Never in my life have a paid for a tailor and I can't sew... so... I guess? Or I just deal with it?
I am so tall though that in the 90s I had to wear men's pants because they didn't used to offer any tall! Stores like jcrew still don't carry tall in store and brands like levis still don't even make them! I often have to go designer for jeans!

@Greentea: same here!! All my height is in my legs and I need a 35" inseam - longer than my husband, who is taller than I am. I remember I used to wear leggings so much as a kid because no one offered long sizes. I was super skinny as a little girl, and they didn't make slim and long. My mom used to unhem my pants or add things like ribbons to the end to make them longer lol!!

I buy most of my stuff off the rack. Once in awhile I get something tailored (ie i buy a large dress that fits my shoulders/chest but not the rest of me, so i have it tailored if i REALLY love it)
Pants are an issue b/c of inseam but I can make do with Loft and 7 for all Mankind
If i had to wear dress shirts regularly, I would surely have to go tailored on them.

I used to need my pants hemmed, but now they offer so many different lengths that I can make do without!

I usually get pants in petite or short, but I've noticed that some of those pants are still a bit long. I think I just pull up on them. I should get them hemmed.
