My LO (7 months) doesn't have any teeth yet. I just tried looking in her mouth and her gum by her canines looks swollen, and I thought the front of her gum looked a little white there. Of course, she won't allow me to get a better look.
I'm just seeing things, yes?

Hmm.....! Well my LO is 9 months and, although her bottom front teeth came in first, her top right canine came in a week or so later (just before 8 months). 6 weeks later, we still haven't had any of the other teeth (which should have come in before). I think that the teeth come in whatever order they choose!

order or eruption is lower central incisors, upper central incisors.
upper lateral incisors, lower lateral incisors then the canines. They almost always come in that order. Not always at the exact times (ages) but the order is the same.

@Cherrybee: crazy!!! I'm probably just grasping at straws trying to find an explanation for her crazy sleep and diarrhea this week but who knows! I'm going to try to pry her mouth open when she wakes up.

Teething makes me feel so incompetent. I pretty much blame everything on teething! My LO got her lower central incisors first and her upper lateral incisors are coming in now (no upper central incisors yet), so she's going to look like a vampire.

@Zbug: When E's first teeth came through we had a few days of diarrhea and terrible nappy rash (she had never had it before) then one morning - a tooth!!

My response was according to the books. Primary teeth will come in out of sequence usually when one of the parents primary teeth did the same thing. Or if there are missing teeth. sometime babies are born without all of the permanent dentition. Some primary teeth won't have a successor.

LO got her bottom front then top front...but her gums have been swollen around her canines since before the top ones came in. We thought she would get her canines first, but then the others erupted.
But who knows! Your baby can teethe in whatever order she wants

My LOs teeth came in lower central incisors then upper lateral incisors, and then lower lateral and upper central all at once. She definitely looked vampire-ish for a week there.
Now she has one top molar and one bottom molar in totally different positions on opposite sides. So. Anything's possible.

A friend of mine had both kids teeth come in canines first, no family history of it and all their teeth were present and accounted for in the end!

DS is 17.5 months and has 12 teeth. His four canines are taking FOREVERRRRRRRRRR to cut/come in.

@Zbug: you never know. For us canines came in after the molars. I have a friend though who's little girl got her canines ah her first teeth.

I was just searching for this exact topic -- DD has been in a terrible mood today and when she was screaming a few minutes ago, I caught sight of a white bump about halfway back on the bottom left! It's definitely a tooth and I'm assuming it's a canine. I've been checking her front gums regularly because she's been showing teething behavior but wasn't seeing anything, now I know what's up. Poor baby. I guess it's unusual but normal...still, I'm going to call her ped on Monday just to be sure.
