Yes. We had an unusual set of circumstances where our car seat base and the make/model of our car allowed us to install the seat in the middle of the back seat.

@boiledpnut: We took a car seat safety class at our hospital, and then had two of the instructors (who are certified) check it after class. They did not recommend we go to a fire station, or the like, to take care of this, since there is often only one person to check it and the recommend two sets of certified eyes to look at it.

They are certified by this organization: National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)

We installed our infant seat behind the passenger side, it wouldn't fit behind my seat or the middle.
Our convertible is in the middle, it doesn't stick out as far so it fits just fine.
We never had them inspected *shameface*

We installed ours today. In the middle. Plan on getting it inspected soon.

We haven't been able to find someone to inspect it, though still looking.
Check your car's owner's manual - it will tell you the safest place to install it - every car is different.

We didn't get ours inspected (oops!) It's in the middle of the back seat.

Our inspection stations were all booked, but we followed a very informative video on youtube to install the carseat. My car doesn't support a center install, so we did it behind the drivers seat. I read that you're more likely to get in a side impact collision on the passenger side, so we decided the drivers side is safer.

@skibobrown: Interesting. I read today that the passenger side is safer because the driver's side gets more impacts. Definitely going to have to read some more to find out for sure.

Ours was installed by the hospital. Similar to @highwire, our hospital has several people on staff that are certified. When we were being released, they showed us how to properly put the baby in the seat and then made sure the base was properly installed in the car before we left.
Ours was in the center of the backseat as well. We couldn't use latch, but felt with proper seatbelt installation it was safer than being on the outside using latch.
