This afternoon we were in a car accident. We were all in the car (DH, N, E and myself ). We are all ok but my car is worse for the wear.
We will be replacing the car seats as soon as possible. In the meantime we will be using our back up seats.
Any bees have experience with replacing car seats post accident?

@HLK208: We got a good scare! After impact with the other car both boys where crying and scared in the backseat. N had blood in his mouth, but I (and the other medical professionals) think he bit his lip durning impact. We rode in just as a precaution because his car seat moved (it slide a great distance in my back seat, dispite having it checked by the police department when we turned his seat around) and the blood present in his mouth.

Scary! I think insurance might cover it, so I'd check with them first!
ETA- Depending on what seat you use, they have different requirements for replacement. For example, Graco requires all seats replaced after any type of crash, whereas Britax outlines criteria for needing replacement.

@Mrs. D: The boys calmed down quickly. My Dh felt awful about the whole thing but in the end we are all ok. The car is protected is pretty well. We are just crossing our fingers that it is fixable.

My Sister was in a really minor fender bender and the other insurance sent her money RIGHT AWAY for a car seat replacement. She didn't even have to ask!

I talked to insurance this afternoon. They said that they will looking at my vehicle by Monday. They will then determine what they will be covering for replacement. They also told me that I will likely have to buy the car seats and send the receipt for reimbursement. Not really what I wanted to hear but I guess we will have to see what monday brings.

Pull out the carseat manual and copy the section that says when the seat must be replaced. The NHTSA defines a minor accident and says a seat doesn't have to be replaced if the accident qualifies as minor and many insurance companies follow those guidelines. Many seat manufacturers mandate replacement after ANY accident however. Insurance should cover it if the manual says it should be replaced, but you will most likely have to fight for it.

Hope they cover it for you! If it makes you feel any better - I was in an accident and my car looked very much like yours did and it was not totaled. (The value of the car at the time was really low, too so they went back and forth on it originally, but it ended up being repaired, and ran great for another 5 years when I traded in to get a mommy car!) Hopefully there's no damage underneath!

Ugh I'm sorry! I called the agent and said "I had 3 seats in my car that need to be replaced." And they told me to buy new seats (comparable value if not the exact same) and as soon as I emailed the receipt they issued a check.

It is different with every company, but usually you front the cost and they reimburse you. SO glad everyone is okay though!

MY MIL was in a small car accident and her insurance company (i believed geico) just cut her a check for the damages and car seat.

@MrsRcCar: I"m so sorry! I was in an accident about this time last year. Insurance said they needed me buy new ones and then they would reimburse me for them after I showed them that I destroyed the current ones (ie: cut the straps).

@MrsRcCar: You will likely need to present the insurance company with instructions from the car seat manufacturer. Most (all?) are "replace after any incident". From what I've heard, most insurance companies are very quick to replace car seats!!

@MrsRcCar: Be prepared to show them the nhtsa guidelines for replacing car seats after a crash. If they refuse to cover, you will need to ask your insurance company to write you a letter stating that they will assume liability in case of a future accident.

My insurance company had me submit a receipt for my car seat and then issued me a check for that amount.

Thank you all very much for your responses. I am hoping to resolve all of this Monday. In the meantime we are using our spare car seats. Nothing wrong with them but I liked the ones in my car.
