There have been several toy threads lately.... but here is another one!
We'll be attempting another 5 hour trip for Christmas - last time we left at bedtime and he was awake for 3.5 hours, screamed for 1.5, and slept for 20 minutes right before we got there. Ugh.
SO this time we'll be attempting during the day. We have a take along tunes, will be bringing lots of books... anything else I should think of?? Dreading this drive and it's more than a month away!

My LO hates the car. Like screams bloody murder the second he gets in. I put the fisher price puppy in the car with him and it definitely helps/entertains him. It's the one where you grab it's ear, hand or foot and it sings and stuff. He still hate the car but this holds off his tantrum. He is 11 months!

ARe there any CDs that he likes? We found that LO LOVES his music together CDs so we BLAST them for the entire ride. Also, maybe a magazine that he can rip up?

Yep another vote for music, we have a bunch of kiddie CDs in the car when LO gets a little anxious we start a family sing along and she joins in, loves it. I also bring a couple different toys so she doesn't get bored, anything that makes noise keeps her entertained and plenty of snacks...snacks always work!

@hilsy85: I always play music while we drive - so he likes it, but it isn't a distraction per se. He doesn't seem to have the ripping paper inclination but.. a box of tissues might do the trick!

we bring Violet (I know, I know, projectiles/heavy/blah blah..) and she really loves that. That would serve the same purpose as the Fisher Price dog too (they're similar). I basically keep a bag on the floor of the backseat and just keep surprising her with things. What about new toys to show him that day? Does he like nomming on little people? shredding things? flipping pages? cuddling toys? you could branch off of his current favorites and find a new/similar toy to surprise him with that day.
ETA - O loves to read catalogs. LOVES them. Maybe start saving catalogs? She points out the babies in the BRU, Carter's catalogs over and over and over..

Here's another vote for music that your LO likes. Also, our dog is a great entertainer in the backseat.

LO likes to look at books, play with her baby doll, and play with her tennis balls. All became a hit around 1.

We had a 5 hour car ride a month ago (9 months). On the way there we left after work so she slept the whole way. We tried to time the return trip during her nap, but that didn't work and it was a NIGHTMARE! We had new toys, books, music, light-y toys, singing toys, everything... Finally, she calmed down and played with our plastic fast food soda and coffee lids for 45 minutes! So, I would suggest something new and totally different! Haha. And if all else fails, just start throwing your trash at him, because that's all we needed to do...
