We are planning on one of the names being a saint's name, so each child can have a patron saint. So, you could use Avery Thomas, and St. Thomas could be the patron saint. Lots of saint names make great middle names!

No, our LO's first name does not have to be of a Saint, but it does turn out that our choice for a girls middle name is that of a Saint and our choice for a boys first name is also that of a Saint. I guess it just happened that way...

Growing up, I thought Catholics HAD to name their children after saints. My SIL has a favorite name if they have a girl that is very trendy and my mom always says, "I have never heard of St. (name)."
Both of J's names are saints, but that is just a coincidence. My niece's name is not a saint and I have a bunch of cousins that definitely do not have a saint's name. I think its a nice thought, but not a "rule".

Huh, DH is Catholic and this hasn't come up at all in our naming discussions! Though now that you mention it he and his sister do both have saint's names... For middle names we are going to use family names, and one of our boy picks happens to be a saint's name, but otherwise our baby will have to wait until confirmation to get a saint's name.

Both of our kids have saints' names for first names (DS's middle name is also a saint name), but it wasn't something we really intended to do. I think a middle name as a saint's name is perfectly fine!

My mom comes from a catholic family & all 8 kids have a saint name, either as their first or middle. It's not too hard though, considering most saint names are pretty 'classic' names to begin with (Thomas, Anne, Marie, etc)

Our LO is a Junior and both his names are saints names but that just coincidence. If your heart is set on it, go for it!

I love names, and it was important to us for our kids to have names with style. That said, we were equally mindful of giving them strong patrons. We thumbed through the Lives of the Saints for ideas, looking around when DD was due and also just seeing if anything jumped out. Both her first and middle are saint's names. She has a little doll of each, and we ask them to pray for her in her bedtime prayers (when we do a little mini litany of her patrons). She's getting old enough to recognize her name, and grins when she hears it in the Eucharistic Prayer on Sundays which is pretty fun.

All of that said, I don't think you HAVE to do anything! I love the name Avery Thomas, and you could still play up any of the St. Thomas' as his patron in the same or different ways we do! And maybe he'll be the first!

Yes, my LO's name is a saint's name, but to be honest that's more coincidental, as we really weren't trying for that.

I'm catholic and we aren't necessarily following the saint rule. We are just picking names we like and most happen to be catholic saint names. DH isn't catholic so it's not something I'm pushing.

I'm Catholic and I have no idea if the names we've chosen are saint names or not. We went to our baptism class a few weeks ago and our priest just had us share the names we've chosen and why we chose them...he didn't mention anything about having to choose saint names.

It wasn't even part of or thought process while choosing names, but we ended up with Thomas as his middle name (after my dad$ so it worked out perfectly!
