If you REALLY don't want to do disposables for the newborn phase there are a bunch of newborn rental programs. We're considering using this one:

we did disposables for the first 2 weeks. and now we do 75% cloth 25% disposables. Do whatever works for you!

@runsyellowlites: That's true! I might try to sew my own covers and used pre-folds at first - there are too many options with CDs! LOL And I'm going to a "cloth diaper party" next Friday! I'm pumped for that!

We are doing CD too. My sister did disposables for the first few weeks, then went to CD. But we are planning to buy a set of infant CD, when we went to the CD store they made the point that it still costs the same or less as disposables for a few weeks, plus you will probably be able to use them for 4-5 months, reducing the wear on your larger set. And the same benefits of CD apply, especially that you'll be able to use the smaller ones for your next baby, or pass them on to another mama.

But you have to do what works for you! Don't feel bad at all about disposables for a few weeks!

@runsyellowlites: I found out from a friend that one of the pediatricians in the Navy hospital said over a quarter of the babies she sees are in cloth. When there's a way to save money, it spreads like wild fire on a Navy base! lol And thus the Cloth Diaper party!

I want to use CD and will probably do disposables at first. People love to give diapers at baby showers so maybe I won't have to buy that many disposables? Wishful thinking I know.

We did disposables for the first 10 days, using up the diapers from the hospital. Next time I might try a rental. We use disposables now and then for travel- whatever works!
