My friend is going to host a baby shower for my husband and I are a local park with our local family/ friends. My husband and I offered to buy the food but we're on a pretty tight budget. Originally we wanted to do burgers and dogs but I think that might be too pricy + I don't want anyone stuck manning the grill. What do you think? It will be in the spring and hopefully won't be too hot.

My parents recently for a party did a DIY deli tray. If you are willing to put in the time rolling the lunch meat and cheese it is so much cheaper to buy sliced stuff from the deli counter rather than ordering a party tray. Then get rolls and fixings and people can make their own sandwiches without someone being stuck at a grill. This wouldn't be great in 90 degree weather but for spring should work out ok.

@snarkybiochemist- That is an idea I have been toying with. Plus I could make pasta and potato salad to go with it for pretty cheap too.
Another idea was a taco bar but I'm worried the meat would get cold. Maybe the DIY deli platter will be best.

I would get those pre made chicken salad or egg salad mixes, put it on bread and cut it into fancy triangle shapes. Or even inside croissants. Then get some fruit and chips and call it a day.

Make a big ham in your crockpot and then quickly slice it before showtime and use the crockpot as the serving container - the insert will keep the ham warmer for longer - but room temp ham tastes just fine! I actually saw a bunch of hams on discount this week for Super Bowl if you wanna grab one and freeze it!
I'd serve that with rolls, macaroni or pasta salad (cheaper/easier than potato salad), chips, and baby carrots with dip. Lemonade or water to drink. And a big cheap sheetcake.
