I think it shouldn't even be an issue. Plus, interracial marriages have been commonplace for a while now, so Im confused why anyone thinks it's a big shock to see it.

I've seen some new Cheerio's commercials lately and if I've seen that one I didn't even notice. That should never be an issue, it is sad that it still is.

@citymouse: Bones, Grey's Anatomy/Private Practice, Firefly, Boy Meets World, Lost, Six Feet Under and My Name Is Earl have all featured/do feature an interracial romance, granted some of them are no longer airing. Just off the top of my head. Plus, there have been shows like ER, Supernatural, Friends and Sex and the City that also showed interracial relationships. Not to mention countless movies. Then there's also Modern Family, which features not only an interracial marriage (Jay and Gloria) but also the family unit of gay couple with asian child.

Maybe not commonplace, but not unheard of. It's been shown enough that it's ridiculous that people got all pissy about a commercial.

I had to look up the commercial and I saw that one and remember it bc I thought it was cute...But I never even noticed the family was biracial. I can't believe others not only noticed, but were bothered by it. Sad:(

It is so sad that there is so much time on people's hands that they feel they can make a big deal out of things like this. I don't have anywhere near enough time to make a stink about much more than eating food and going potty.

My sister has adopted two beautiful African American babies. Luckily I have never seen her face any of this. Most people just comment on her beautiful babies. I live in a very conservative and educated town so that may help. She lives in the northeast. When they looked for jobs they were apprehensive about certain sections of the US.

I never noticed the couple was biracial till I saw something on the news about it. I just thought it was a cute commercial and the little girl was adorable.

@Mrs. Polish: there will always be people like this alas... but they are definitely the exception! Except on YouTube...

*edit to add, my sister dated a black guy for over a year, and it was a huge issue for some people, unfortunately. From my mom and grandma making comments, to looks/comments they would get when they were out together... yeah. This is still unfortunately the reality for some people.

This breaks my heart, but it doesn't surprise me. It's not popular to voice these bigoted points of view anymore, but people still hold them - and not just the older generation. Unfortunately the Internet lets people hide behind their computer screens.

Why is it an issue? I've noticed a lot more ads showing mixed and alternative family combos lately and think it's great! It's reflective of what's actually going on in the world, so yay for marketers to recognize that!

I love that commercial, it's so cute! It shouldn't be an issue.

I wish this was a non-issue. 2013 and racism is alive and well. Unfortunately!

We have a biracial President ... it is sad that a biracial couple in a commercial is such a big deal.

I just saw this commercial for the first time yesterday and I immediately thought "it's about time."

I think this is more indicative of internet trolling than anything else. There are certain people will say absolutely anything to get a rise out of others on the Internet, whether they actually believe what they're saying or not. Maybe I'm being too hopeful or idealistic, but I think in the real world (i.e. not on YouTube) people are fine with the commercial and are overall probably baffled by the negative comments on YouTube. The internet is a scary place sometimes...

I did notice that the couple was biracial and thought to myself "Way to go Cheerios!". My husband didn't even notice but thought the commercial was hysterical/awesome which is a big deal since he loathes commercials almost exclusively watches tv on DVR so he can fast forward through them.

I think the fact that this commercial is controversial at all is disgusting.

As for the portrayal of interracial couples in the media, I feel like there are "acceptable" combinations -- like white guy, Asian girl -- or combinations that are played for humor, such as Gloria and Jay on Modern Family. There are combos that make "sense" for people in general, and then ones that don't, for some reason.

Maybe it's just me, and I do think we're getting away from that narrow set of media portrayals more, but I just struggle to see why people have a hard time accepting interracial relationships of all types. Or rather, why they feel the need to spew such hate and ignorance-filled speech about it. It's so easy to hide behind an anonymous comment on the Internet, but would you stand up and say those things face-to-face? Bigots are such cowards.

So ridiculous - I didn't think anything of it until I saw this thread. It is shocking that people still care and have such hatred

@kjpugs: +1 on it's not AMERICA reacting, it's a few people with antiquated thinking.

Side note- that "biracial law student" was my roomate for three years in college!

I saw the commercial and honestly, I thought it was great that a family like mine was in a commercial for a change. Then I saw the news and all the hate peole were spewing and the spark of hope died. I worry for my kids honestly, people are hateful.

I wish it was just the internet, but lets face it, people always have something to say. When you need a t-shirt to let people know that you aren't the nanny, we haven't come far enough.
