I honestly am not embarrassed when my daughter has public meltdowns. I don't know any of these people so I can't concern myself with judgments from complete strangers. It doesn't make me feel like a bad parent, etc. She can't control her own emotions and if it happens outside of the house sometimes...so be it!

But, yes, we've had public meltdowns. We try to minimize them as best we can, but sometimes, when all else fails, we just remove him from the situation. Not only for discipline reasons (to talk, calm him down, etc.) but also out of respect for the other patrons, wherever we may be. I sympathize with other parents when their child is having a meltdown, but no one wants to hear a screaming, wailing child for very long. Take the kid outside if nothing else is working! Sometimes, all they need is a change of scenery.

It's only birth control for a while cause then you become delusional and start thinking, "But mine will be different." No major meltdowns yet but then again, she's got many years ahead to start. Not sure how I'll deal with them yet but it's definitely something that I won't tolerate.

I remember that commercial, I don't know if it aired here, or if I saw it somewhere else.

I have to admit to being guilty of giving looks- sometimes dirty- when I see a child misbehaving. Usually though it's not because of the child's behaviour, but the parents reaction. That guy in the commercial did the right thing letting him scream it out. It bugs me when I see parents dragging their kids screaming out of the store, and when they scream back. It also ticks me off when they bribe them, or coddle them, last week on the bus, I heard a woman constantly apologizing to her daughter!

My son is 3 and my poor nanny just got this experience for the first time the other day. The three of us were at Whole Foods and Liam started melting down. The look on my nanny's face was priceless, she started hunkering down to his level to start reasoning with him so I had to swoop down, grab him and tell her to come with me right away. We don't subject poor behavior onto innocent bystanders haha. To let your child scream and tantrum at the detriment of other shoppers is rude and selfish. Ignoring a child that is emotional is also cold imo. I remove him from people that didn't choose to have a child in their life and go let him calm down outside with me or in the car. I think the comfort and ear functions of others should outweigh my need for a loaf of bread. We can go back in once he calms down.

I'm one of those people giving judgement looks... if you can't expect your kid to behave, then they shouldn't be out in public.

I can honestly say no one in my family would ever dare throwing a fit in a public place (not I, nor either of my younger brothers, and we never have) because one of our parents would just pick us up, put whatever they had down and march us out of the store. There is no reason for a child to ever behave like that in public, ever.

I realize not all parents have the same idea but Cameron will never be allowed to do that, and he will be taught that if it ever comes down to it. At that age, they should better.

If you've got a baby in a car seat/stroller and they're really young and start crying, I think that's very different... they're crying because they have needs, not because they want something they can't have.

This thread reminds me of the Modern Family episode where Cam and Mitch accidentally lock Lily in the car... and Cam starts freaking out and says he needs help right away because other people are looking at him and judging him as a parent.... definitely one of my favorite tv scenes ever!!
