Remember the lady who was mauled by her friend's chimp? Well she is seeking permission to sue CT for $150 million.
Do you think the state is responsible? Do you think the state/ tax payers should pay her $150 million in damages?

Its a horrible tragedy. No one should be allowed to keep wild animals like that. I don't see why the state should pay...but she should get her expenses covered.

I'm not sure that the state should pay, (I'm a CT taxpayer so maybe I'm biased!) however, the state was aware of this chimp and should have taken him away from the owner long before this attack happened.
Honestly? I don't blame her for wanting to sue the state. The actual owner of the chimp at the time of the attack has since passed away so what other course of action does she have? I'm guessing anyone in her situation would at least want their medical expenses covered.

The person she already sued bore responsibility for her animal's actions. I don't see how the state should be responsible for her medical expenses. The attack occurred on private property and the victim voluntarily got very close to a wild animal. After all the chimp belonged to her friend.
I would need several lifetimes or the Power ball to pay back her medical bills. I would want someone else to cover my expenses too, but taxpayers don't bear this responsibility.

Such a horrible situation. I would be suing the state, too. I remember reading that this chimp stopped traffic and chased police officers years before he ripped this woman's face off. They even passed a law saying people couldn't own chimps and other exotic animals in the state. Had the state enforced this law this attack wouldn't have happened.

No, the State is not responsible . . . and there are constitutional implications at stake here too (government power should be limited to the extent necessary).

No the State should not pay! People do dumb things all the time and (I consider owning wild animals one of them) but it's not fair to burden every taxpayer for this issue. She got close to the chimp as a favor for a friend. I do feel bad for her though. She should set up a National donation drive instead. Coming at it from that angle would be better and the help she needs can be spread out across the country. After seeing her pictures, I don't mind donating but think it's wrong of her to sue the state.

Oh man, I remember this crazy story b/c I used to live/work close to that area & had a co-worker that literally lived down the street!
Based on what the article said, the states seem to be bear some responsibility since they were warned about this and didn't do anything about it.

I don't feel like I have enough info/have thought about this enough to give a very firm opinion.
However my initial opinion is the state should not be responsible here. I'm not sure we should be holding the government responsible for the actions of private people, even if those people were breaking the law. And if I remember the story correctly (which I might be wrong?) this lady who got mauled was a friend of the owner. So she had to know about the propensities of the chimp. I feel like there should probably be a bit of responsibility on her own behalf for putting herself in a dangerous situation.

There was a memo that was sent to the state which they ignored or didn't attend to in a timely manner by the time the attack happened.
Granted, I don't think anyone should be able to own a wild animal, but you know what, even dogs that have been docile their entire lives have been known to bite out of the blue. I feel like the state should have at least done an investigation.
FWIW, I live in CT, not in the town, but close and the thought of a chimp running in the streets absolutely terrifies me. I am seriously trying to think about it from the perspective of having the owner as a next door neighbor...would would I do?
