@Foodnerd81: Oh, yeah that's weird. I do get some of those too and wonder the same thing. I think I just think I have to put an extra personalized message this year because I'm going to Chanukah so I want to make sure to include a Merry Christmas to those who celebrate.

@Cherrybee: That sounds fun! Yeah this year Chanukah is super early, our holiday fun will be long gone by Christmas time. Both of my siblings and DH's brother married non Jews so they all do Christmas too, i'm the only one who didn't. Can't say I'm upset about it though..... we have our tradition of taking advantage of the short lines at a theme park and then going to Chinese for dinner

I always wondered why someone would be offended only because if *I* celebrated Christmas (which I do), and sent you a Christmas card, it's because *I* celebrate it and want to pass on Christmas cheer! I'm not sending you one to make you also celebrate it. Likewise, I would be thrilled if I received a Chanukah card from someone celebrating the Jewish holiday.

I always thought that one could send someone a greeting based on their own belief, not the belief(s) of the recipient? Do I make sense?

Anyway, I love the holidays and wish I got more cards! I seem to get a lot of holiday email/e-cards...

If people get offended that's one less card you have to send next year. You only get offended if you let yourself be offended. And who doesn't like holiday cards no matter what holiday they celebrate?

We celebrate Christmas but I know some of our friends don't. Our friends still love to get our cards. I love holiday cards!! I am looking forward to sending out them this year and I love getting them in the mail every year.

i TOTALLY agree with @foodnerd81 ~!! i get irritated when i receive a generic card with just a signature inside under the generically printed message. sometimes my name isn't even there. i throw those away. but i save every single card with pictures on it or with a meaningful message inside.

I really believe that getting offended about holidays is harder to understand if one celebrates Christmas, because it's the holiday celebrated by the vast majority of Americans. If you come from the dominant culture, it's not always okay to tell someone from a minority culture that it's the thought that counts.

@spaniellove: Totally! I had to, as an adult, learn to appreciate that it's the thought that counts. When I was younger it would make me feel alienated more than anything.

    Wow! So many varying opinions!

DH and I celebrate Christmas, but a number of our friends/co-workers don't and so this year we purchased a card that says "Peace, Love, and Joy" on the front (no Christmas trees, reindeer, snowmen) and on the back we wrote, "Have a wonderful holiday season."

I would not be offended if I received a different type of holiday card, but I know some others who might be. I am just happy to receive the cards, especially if they have cute family photos on them!

I only have a few people on my list that don't celebrate Christmas so I always have a bunch of Happy Holidays/Happy Hanukkah cards that I send to them. I don't know what I'll do if I get cards printed up when the baby is here. I like to say Merry Christmas, because that's what I mean! Maybe I'll just print out some pictures and send them in the Happy Holidays or Happy Hanukkah cards.
