We are hosting Christmas Eve dinner at our house for about 10 adults and I'm struggling to decide what to make. My mom will most likely make a beef tenderloin or other "meaty" dinner on Christmas night so I want to stay away from any roasts. What are you making?

Typically we order in Indian food, but we won't this year so looking for ideas.
I think we will do a hot chocolate bar this year.

It will likely be just the four of us and maybe my in laws. I'm thinking lighter fare, more apps style Maybe some kind of homemade soup, pasta fagiol and homemade ravioli? I think my girls will love both! We have leftover homemade sauce I froze so it will be perfect!

Our main dish is spaghetti in clam sauce but we start with escarole soup, antipasta platter, clans casino, shrimp cocktail and spinach balls.

To pair with a roast I'd go with a herb crusted salmon. For sides mashed potatoes and roasted veggies would go well with both proteins.
This year, we are having spending Christmas by ourselves and I'm making Christmas Eve chili for the first time! I'll have twice baked potatoes and cornbread to accompany plus a decent salad- maybe kale.

What about a cold shrimp cocktail tray? Easy enough to pick up at the grocery store and they always get eaten up at our family functions

We do a potluck appetizer dinner for the whole family. There are about 40 of us.

Moms making beef bourguignon with noodles. I'll probably do roasted carrots and a salad...maybe beets

I'd either do heavy apps, or something Italian. Baked ziti or lasagna and meatballs, garlic bread and salad.

We do a hearty soup, cold sliced ham, small sliced rolls, cheese slices, green salad, fruit salad, and maybe a cold side or two.

We do spaghetti and meatballs for Christmas Eve and then we do a couple of lasagnas for our other family get together usually a couple of days before or after Christmas.

My dad hosted my friends and I for a few years and he always did home made pizzas. So good!

You could do a brothy soup - like Cioppini with breads and maybe a grain salad? Feels fancy but still a little on the lighter side and completely different than a roast.

My mom always does soup: Oster stew (family tradition) and chicken noodle. The rest of us bring appetizers! chips/dip, I always bring cocktail shrimp, and of course an assortment of Christmas cookies.

Great ideas. I'm also working 1/2 day that day so I won't have a ton of time to prep. I'm leaning towards lasagna, but maybe soup and salads. Last year I made homemade clam chowder, which was so yummy!

We always do a honey baked ham, mashed potatoes, green beans, and rolls for Christmas Eve dinner.

We're doing a dinner on Saturday and I'm basically doing "Dinner by Costco." We'll have a heat and slice smoked turkey breast, I'll saute some green beans with almonds, make a mixed green salad of dried cranberries and nuts with poppyseed dressing, and bake the mashed sweet potatoes and mac n' cheese from the Costco deli counter. Dessert will be ice cream.

We are having tortellini soup for Christmas Eve. Add some good crusty bread and a salad - excellent, not-too-heavy dinner.

Pending this baby's arrival, we are planning on ham, potatoes, rolls, some kind of veggie. But probably will do turkey dinner on Christmas.
@gingerbebe: I feel like we are going to have "holiday week by Costco". Just trying to figure out when to go and get stuff.

My parents always host Christmas Eve for our family friends and neighbours ... They always serve seafood chowder, meat pies, and homemade pizzas for the non-seafood eaters
