With DS1 we had his circumcision done in the hosptial when he was 3 days old. I just delievered DS2 in the same hospital with the same OB but now they have switched to doing circumcisions after 14days old in their office. Is this common? How old was your son when they were circumcised and was it in hospital or in office.

DS1 (born in 2012) had his circ and tongue tie done at 2 days old while we were still in the hospital.
DS2 (born Dec 2016) had his circ and tongue tie done the day he was born in the hospital. His pediatrician was going on vacation for Christmas break and she wanted to be the one to do it.

My son couldn't be circumcised in hospital because he would be insured on my husband's insurance in a different network. š
We had our done in office when he was 8 days old at his weight check appointment. My son was very happy about this because brit mihal (not Jewish but have Jewish ancestry and she agrees with a lot of it).
He did great, only fussed when they took his diaper off.

The on call pediatrician that sees newborns at the hospital (so no one associated with my peds practice) recommended we do the circumcision not with the OB but with a specialist. My pediatrician who we saw a week after was confused by the recommendation but we had already left hospital so I didnāt know I could contact the OB about it.
I called the specialist and first they donāt see infants until they are at least 6 months old. And then it takes months to actually get an appt and on the schedule for surgery. I was trying to get one before the calendar year was out at and finally managed to in December. At the initial consultation, the doctor said he could have just done it as an infant but again too late. Little man had to not be fed anything leading up to the surgery and at 10 months this was hard. There was also a tornado warning so non emergency surgeries were put on hold until it was over which delayed his surgery for two hours. Surgery went fine but he threw up constantly bc of the anesthesia (full body) that we were admitted overnight to the hospital for dehydration. It was a long day

DS was done in the hospital at 1 day old in 2013. I just got the paperwork for my current pregnancy and my OB no longer does it then. If the baby was to be a boy we would have to make and appointment to take him to the office within the first couple of weeks.

As far as I know my practice always does it at like 1 day old right in the hospital. I think it's more.cost efficient.
My OB does it, is that weird? -
The reason theyāre making the change to waiting until 2 weeks or even 6 months old is because of the risk of hemorrhages. A newborn can die from losing as little as an ounce of blood after the circumcision, if I remember right. That risk is one reason we wonāt be doing it.

Here the OB does it. But only one of the six will. So if heās working that day, it can be done right away. But if not you have to schedule it for a bit later? We didnāt cicrumsize but thatās what my friends have told me.

We had a mohel do it (not Jewish, but I was more comfortable with it for several reasons - the mohel schedules days for many non Jewish families in our area). Ds was about 2 weeks I think, he fussed right after, I nursed him and he was fine.

The OBs in my practice do circumcisions in the hospital a day or 2 after birth generally. Whoever is on rotation that day performs the procedure.
The same OB happened to do both of my boys, 3 years ago and then 2 weeks ago.

Both were in hospital at 1 day old by their pediatrician.

DS1 was done at about 2 weeks. It was by my OB but was done at the hospital.
DS 2 was 16 days. My OB was away and nobody else in his office does it. We were referred to a dr who does circumcisions & vasectomies. It was done in his office.

I've chosen to not do circs anymore, but when I did do them, we did them in the office and not in the hospital for most patients primarily because insurance rarely covers this anymore as it is considered an elective procedure rather than medically necessary, and it is much cheaper as an outpatient procedure than inpatient. And under 2 weeks old should be fine. I personally will not circumcise any of my sons, but if I had to pick I would do it outpatient when they are a wee bit older (still <14 days).

LOās was done in the doctorās office at 10-11 days old. I forget why, but if we waited any longer after 14 days the how or where of the circ would have had to be changed. We had the option of the hospital, but the one doctor I really despised from my practice was on call and I didnāt want her touching my baby. The doctor who did the circ was the one who performed my cesarean and all of the dif pediatricians LO has seen have given compliments on the cut.

One day old, in the hospital. He didn't seem bothered by it at all, and it healed well.

Most in my circle that I know all had them done while at the hospital; only my Jewish friends that needed to host the ceremony would do it out.

Our health insurance (United healthcare) will only pay for it if done in the hospital before we are discharged. Our the midwife group does it right in the nursery at the hospital (parents can not be present for it but baby goes back to room with mom immediately afterwards.)

@pachamama: No, itās common for OB/midwife to do it in my area. I was actually looking at the hospital page online for where Iām delivering and itās their policy your ob/midwife does it in hospital unless opt out.
