Hi all! DH and I are not preg yet, but are thinking about #2. We CD DS, but didn't start until he was around 12 lbs since we were new to parenting and CDing (we didn't want to overwhelm ourselves). With #2, we'd like to start from the beginning.
So....if you CDed your NB, did you have a newborn stash? Did you use a rental program? Did you use AIOs? Prefolds and covers? Thanks for any advice!

A friend of mine had a small baby (5 something lbs at birth, and continued to be a small little guy) and she told me to get size 1 prefolds, not newborn. Her DS was still wearing size 1 at 5 months. I took her advice and completely agree! We started at about 2 weeks after birth (DS was around 6.5-7 lbs at that pt) just bc ppl had given us NB disposables. So, we use Size 1 Green Mtn Prefolds, with Thirsties covers. DS is 2 months now and we love it! Once he started sleeping longer at night, we switched his overnight diaper setup to a Size 1 Green Mtn fitted, with a Stay Dry Nighttime fleece/hemp liner with a Thirsties cover. No leaks!!

Awesome! I already have a dozen small prefolds. Do you think I'd need another dozen so I don't have to wash every day? How do you use the prefold? Jellyroll? Pad fold? I've only ever used them to stuff in my pockets, so I'm unfamiliar with actually using them on the baby

We did a rental of fitteds and covers. I plan to do the same if we ever have another.

I would start with 2 doz, yeah. DS would do 10-12 dipes at first. Now he is 6-8, but its still nice to not have to rush to get laundry done. We also do the Angel Wing Fold: http://diaperpages.com/angel_fold.php it creates a gusset, which means with the covers we get two gussets for protection!

We rented with Twin City diaper until E was about 10 lbs and they couldn't hold the pee anymore. It was a $150 deposit and $30/month or something super cheap. Definitely worth it. We did BG AIO's

When I used cloth during that stage, I used prefolds and covers. I wasn't a fan of AIO's on my tiny baby. I have 2 dozen size 1 GMD prefolds and I love them now that she's bigger.

I used the same pockets that I was still using on DD when she was 9 months! They were suuuuper bulky though, so for #2 I have purchased some newborn Grovia AIOs. Hoping I like these ones better!

What covers did you use, for those that used prefolds?
I was looking at maybe a few RaR newborn covers and maybe a few size 1 applecheeks/thirsties (something that will last a little longer)?
DS was over 9lbs at birth, though I know that's not necessarily a future predictor.

We did the Twin City Diaper rental. It was crazy cheap! A shipment of brand new BG newborn diapers arrived at our door just before DS was born. Loved it and would totally do it again!

For covers, I have been using exclusively Thirsties Size one. I have a few of the small Thirsties covers that I used when she was teeny tiny. Now that she's bigger, I'm exploring other covers and recently purchased a Bummis cover and another Thirsties Size two. I'm also using gDiapers, but I'm not that fond of how the velcro is holding up.

@citymouse: @avivoca: I want to know how you guys that used prefolds on a newborn got the runny poop to stay in the diaper?! We had to switch to Kissas fitteds because the textured fabric "grabbed" the poo, basically, keeping it from shooting straight up the back. I'd love to use prefolds, too, though!
I also wanna know what fold(s) to use. I hate the jelly roll because it's so hard to master. But is that my best option?

@allison: The only fold that kept the runny breastfed poop in was the angle wing fold. Sadly, I only mastered that fold last month.

@allison: Angel Wing fold!! It creates a "poop pocket" with a leg gusset. This post is where we learned: http://diaperpages.com/angel_fold.php One tip... make sure the gusset is low enough on the leg to actually catch everything, but not too low that the cover won't cover it. If you need to, pull the gusset low on the thigh, put the cover on, and then push the part of the gusset that is showing outside the cover, inside the cover
