Ok bees, I know there are some creative thinkers out there, so I need some ideas! Really want to make this happen.
Background- We haven't been on a family vacation in well over 2 years. We have a credit for 4 flights that we can use from a previously cancelled trip, and plenty of hotel points to cover close to a week but no other budget (just what we would normally spend on food). We are expecting baby #3 in the spring, so this will be our only opportunity for a long time.
Situation- DH is traveling for work to Mexico during "week 1". We absolutely can't join him until the second weekend. The following week happens to be the kids' school vacation- "week 2". I don't mind if they miss that extra week of school.
DH's idea- Fly together to the in-laws' house at the beginning of week 1 (he has a stop over there anyway). He does his work stuff and then comes back there. We (me +kids) spend the two week there. His reason- we haven't visited in a really long time and kids would love spending time with grandparents. This is true. I wouldn't have to fly by myself. BUT I won't have a break from cooking, cleaning, etc. and obviously would not be sitting beachside or by a pool.
My idea- DH does his work thing during week 1. I fly with the kids to Mexico at the end of the week and we spend week 2 there together. My reason- If I'm going to solo parent that first week anyway, I rather have a "real" vacation that second week (no cooking/cleaning). BUT kids won't get to see their grandparents.
The ideal situation would have us both visit the grandparents and do something more vacation-y, but we can't do double flights. So...help!
