When we have a lot of spinoff threads, we'll sometimes get complaints... so I started stripping the "S/O" off of titles. And now we don't get complaints about spinoff threads.
Do you like spinoff threads? Why or why not?

complains? Why were people complaining? I don't get it.

I don't get it either. I love spinoff threads.
MrBee, you can strip the spinoff off my thread! lol
hostess / wonderful honeydew / 32460 posts
Haha. Don't really think it's necessary to start a thread with S/O!
GOLD / wonderful grape / 20289 posts
Of all the things to complain about.... I'm not sure why the letters "s/o" are one of them.
But whatever makes people happy.

I like the spinoff threads and how they keep conversations going. I did sometimes get lost when I saw a bunch of threads with SO and didn't know what the original was.
grapefruit / 4136 posts
Doesn't really bother me either way I think it's kind of nice to know where the thought came from sometimes, but hey, it's not necessary at all!
honeydew / 7589 posts
I think it's weird that people would complain, but I don't think the S/O is necessary. I shall refrain from using them.
honeydew / 7687 posts
I guess I don't get why anyone notes that it *is* a spin-off but I'm not sure why anyone would complain about it. Weird!
pineapple / 12802 posts
I like them because then I feel like I'm not hijacking the other thread. Spinoffs are polite. hehe.
pomegranate / 3643 posts
Would it be funny to create a thread and title it "S/O: Do you like spinoff threads?"
clementine / 943 posts
I get annoyed with spinoff threads, especially when they have nothing to do with TTC, Pregnancy, or babies. I feel sometimes I'll come on the boards and every thread is "What are you making for dinner tonight?" "Spinoff: What did you have for lunch today?" "Spinoff: what's your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?"
I guess I feel sometimes the site gets away from its original intentions? I mean... It IS supposed to be a TTC/Pregnancy/Parenting site right?

I don't mind spin off threads. Keeps things lively.
coconut / 8854 posts
@Pink Champagne: I think so, but like me, I'm not pregnant, TTC or a parent yet. But I still enjoy coming on the boards and chatting with everyone! So I feel like most of the topics about babies, TTC and what not really don't pertain to me. In a year or two, yes I will be TTC but right now, I participate in the non-baby related threads....
pomelo / 5331 posts
Spinoff threads are like any other thread to me, if I don't like the topic or have anything to contribute, I just ignore them. I don't think it's necessary to add s/o to them, but I can't see complaining about it. And every other pregnancy site has non-preg-related non-baby-related threads. That's why we have a board drop down, if you just want baby/patenting/pregnancy threads, you can just go to those boards easily enough.

I'm totally indifferent to using the S/O, but I don't think it's necessary to be there. Tidy's things up taking it away
I enjoy the chatty threads, I come here to 'hang out' with the community as well as ask questions and offer advice on pregnancy and parenting

I thought it was rude to not use "s/o" in a thread title -- like, I was plagiarizing someone else's thread idea if I didn't recognize that it wasn't 100% my own brainstorm for a topic . . .
I guess I'll stop feeling the need to use "s/o"!
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
Haha. Confession - I love seeing the S/O get stripped.
coconut / 8234 posts
I have more important things to worry about than the use of S/O or not...like why Channing Tatum is the sexiest man of 2012. blech!
coconut / 8854 posts
@Mrs. Tricycle: I thought it was rude too!! That's why I always put it in front too!! I guess we can be as "rude" as we want now Save @mrbee: some time!
admin / wonderful grape / 20724 posts
@Mrs. Tricycle: I sometimes feel that way too! In those cases, in the beginning of the thread, I will usually give a shout out to the person or thread that inspired the thread.
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
@Mrs. Tricycle: That's exactly why I have used it, too! I didn't want someone to think I was stealing their thread idea. I actually like seeing the "s/o" because if it's a topic I find interesting I'll go looking for the original thread. I definitely won't use it from now on, though.
admin / wonderful grape / 20724 posts
@Pink Champagne: yah but to get those questions answered (and quickly!), it helps to have a thriving community of people.
If we policed thread topics, the community would be a fraction of the size and you wouldn't get answers you wanted very quickly...

Confession - I was one of the ones it used to annoy lol. There was one day in particular when I came to the forums home and almost every topic was "S/O!" or "Spinoff of a spinoff!" and the topics were SO similar I got annoyed. But that was the only time. I was having a bad day and probably PMSing or something lol. Regardless, I did notice the lack of S/Os lately and had wondered why. I like that it doesnt say it right in the title. I dont think its necessary.
bananas / 9227 posts
Good call! After awhile every 3rd post will have S/O in front of it. But I do love spinoff threads
pomegranate / 3716 posts
I enjoy spinoff threads! And I also really enjoy the threads that have nothing to do with parenting/children, haha!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
I found some of the spinoff threads annoying, because I couldn't figure out what they were spinoffing from and THAT was the topic that I wanted to read. So I would just get frustrated because the spinoff thread got me interested in something I couldn't find. (These were not the "What are you having for Lunch" variety)
cantaloupe / 6751 posts
I don't mind spinoff threads - I also thought it was kinda like giving a 'shout out' to the OG creator.
grapefruit / 4669 posts
I don't have a problem with spinoffs, but I also wouldn't notice whether S/O was in the title or not. And I like random topics! Sometimes they're the only fresh ones that apply to me and they keep me occupied when I'm bored.
pineapple / 12053 posts
i don't know why the S/O would annoy people (because the thread is still there, right?) but i think they are fine and keep a conversation going without hijacking a thread and like @Mrs. Tricycle i thought it was a good thing to not "steal" someone's idea. but it really doesn't bother me either way if the S/O is there or not!
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
@birdofafeather: haha that's what I don't understand either! It's not like the entire thread is being deleted...it's still a spinoff regardless of if it says "S/O" so I don't really see what the fuss is about.
honeydew / 7916 posts
@Pink Champagne: We're all at different stages of TTC/pregnancy/parenting, and talking about different topics helps us bond regardless of which stage we're in. TTC has taken me much longer than expected (really I thought I'd be pregnant by now and talking about babies) but I'm glad we can talk about the things everyone has in common.
clementine / 943 posts
@mrbee: I guess I should clarify- I don't mind other conversations, but it's kind of annoying to click on "Boards" and EVERY single thread is some random conversational thread. Yes, I could totally click on the drop down boxes to filter, but I don't come on here to talk about specific issues all the time- part of what I like about this community is clicking on conversations about things I haven't yet experienced with my LO yet, so that I can learn about others experiences or bookmark them for the future- I'm not looking for something specific, so I browse through the feed.. Lately, it's been a little "cluttered" with a LOT of "other" topics, that's all. It's not a bad thing to have other topics, just kind of obnoxious sometimes.
