My one month old is EBF and she hasn't pooped in a week. I know breast fed babies can go a long time between poops but she started showing signs of discomfort yesterday...lots of smelly gas and more crying than usual.
I gave my older LO diluted apple juice when she was constipated at 5 months....should I try it for my newborn?

I think I would try the rectal thermometer trick first. And before that I'd probably try stimulating her a little bit with a wipe...the nurse did that at the hospital when LO didn't poop after birth.

@autumnlove: Basically, get a wipe, put it around your finger and just poke her booty hole a little bit like you're trying to coax it out. Then wait awhile and if nothing happens, putting a rectal thermometer in will probably unleash a week's worth of yikes pretty quickly.

I would do as @tororojo: suggested, I've heard both methods are pretty successful at getting out the goods. I would check with her ped before giving diluted juice, just in case it's too much for her tummy to handle so young. Poor baby, hope she gets some relief soon!

I would try the rectal thermometer and youtube baby massage to get things going. I did the massage and she pooped soon after. You rub their bellies and bicycle their legs.

We don't have a problem, R poops all day long. But the one time we took her temperature, she pooped all over the thermometer. So I would try it for sure.

@autumnlove: did she go yet? It wasn't immediately afterwards, but she did poop the same day. The thermometer trick has never worked with either baby ...

We did the massage... rubbing their belly/abdomen clockwise and bicycle legs. It usually worked. A friend suggested qtip with olive oil.

@Andrea: I ate a lot of prunes last night! Her tummy is rock hsrd today and she screamed during her last massage. 
I made an appointment with her Dr for later this afternoon.
My parents are coming today... I'm sure they will have some suggestions!

We used a tiny bit of prune juice on our 4-day-old, and it worked like a charm!

@prettylizy: No luck. She doesn't want to eat anymore and she is straining a lot. Beet red face! I'm massaging her and bicycling those twig legs like crazy.

@prettylizy: @Andrea: A nurse called me to give me some tips and cancel our appointment for now...give LO water a few times a day and continue to massage her belly. Give her a glycerin suppository on Fri if she is still backed up. Call them in Monday if she still doesn't produce a #2.
My mom is gonna find a way to blame me...lol!
