If you have contrasting paint color for the trim in your home are you happy you did it? I wonder if this look will get old and look dated quickly. Right now I'm leaning toward light grey walls and white trim or the reverse of that.

All our trim is white regardless of the room color.
I have never seen the trim painted the same as the walls

We also have white trim throughout the house, no matter the color on the walls. I think white trim is pretty classic.

We have white trim everywhere, with many other colors throughout the house. Our neighbors did navy blue doors and trim. It sounds weird but it looks pretty sharp! I worry it will be trendy and painting trim seems like a pain so I probably wouldn't do it!

We are in the process of converting our wood stained trim to white trim in our house. It looks a lot fresher but I've noticed a few things about the white trim.
Unless youre getting really high quality baseboard trim, any bumps show as brown easily. Also general dirt shows. Lastly, as trim has shifted and weve had cracks, you see the black shadow of the crack really easily and we have to caulk more often. When the trim was wood colored you didn't really see the seams/cracks.

White baseboards are a pain to keep looking nice with small children. I would go with something a bit darker for the baseboards, particularly in the public rooms, like in Monticello: https://www.monticello.org/site/house-and-gardens/interiors
Look at the entrance hall and the parlor in that link--I really like that blue-gray against the white/cream! I might do that when we get around to repainting. We've got friends who have black baseboards in the entrance and it looks really good against the white walls and wood floors. It sounds weird, but it really works and it's very practical.

Thanks everyone. yeah I think white trim is pretty standard and is the safe option. Currently some of the rooms in our apartment have trim that is the same color as the walls (cream colored)
@T.H.O.U.: Yes this is one of my reasons for being open to a darker colored trim

Our trim and walls are painted the same beige color and it is so blaah.
We will definitely be repainting the walls, and will probably bite the bullet and do the trim + doors a brighter white color. I think with the walls painted the beige trim would probably look ok, but the previous owner did such a crappy job painting that I feel like I should just fix it and be done with it.

@Mamaof2: You should see my house! The previous owners even painted the doors the color of the rooms. And they had terrible taste in colors. We painted the important rooms and all the doors but there's stil plenty to do!

I haven't had a hard time keeping white trim clean, especially baseboards (it's probably because we dont have pets, dont wear shoes in the house, have a cleaning person). I think white is the safest choice, and it is easier to change the paint color on the walls as opposed to all the detail work involved with painting trim. I also take a magic eraser around once in a while and touch up the spots that are scuffed.

@looch: thats a really good point about the walls being easier to repaint than the trim

If you ever plan to sell the house I'd go with white trim. I wouldn't buy a house with non-white trim because I'd want to change the wall colours and wouldn't want to also have to do all the trim.

I like the idea of black trim but I think it would only look good if your trim was perfect. We're painting all our trim the same white to make our lives easier. And while I am willing to experiment with wall colors that are easy to re roll, I really don't want to have to paint over trim several times.
We have a light gray on our walls with bright white trim (in the one room we painted so far) and it looks really nice!

I would only paint my trim white. I especially like the look of bright white trim against light grey walls. But white is a nice neutral that goes with anything.

The house I grew up in had trim similar to what @honeybear: posted, but it was also built in in the 1700s so I think it was a more time appropriate thing (the rooms would be a super pale shade of green or blue with dark green or blue trim)
I don't like bright white, but go with a white for trim usually. We haven't repainted in my new house and a lot of the trim in the living area is still dark wood from the 70s. I doubt we'll change it until we update the kitchen (because it's also original)
