I was reading up on birth control, and noticed there's "mirena" and also copper IUDs. Do any of you have either, and why'd you choose one over the other?

I've never had either. I might go with the copper IUD after we have our 3rd though. Haven't thought that far ahead!

copper lasts longer (10 years), but it can also make your periods much heavier and crampier. it also has no hormones whereas mirena does. mirena lasts 5 years.
i was going to get the mirena, but on my local parenting listserv, several women shared their really bad complications with mirena. they had to get surgery to get it removed, and apparently these are known but rare side effects.
there are probably only a handful? a hundred? women on mirena on my listserv, so it can't be that uncommon. that scared me and has me rethinking iuds. i'm not sure what i'm going to do anymore...
