@caitcat: One of my neighbors also had the good idea of stocking up on gift certificates from our favorite local restaurants to use later down the road, but giving them some cash flow now.

@yellowbeach: Thank you for everything you are doing. I also work for a hospital (non clinical) and I know how difficult this is. Here in CA, testing seems to be improving but I know we are still low on PPE. Nothing I learned in public health school has prepared me for this!

@yellowbeach: @JJ2626: testing here in the SF Bay Area for some reason turned a corner this weekend, at least where I work. Saturday no one was really getting tested and Sunday everyone who has respiratory symptoms and fever got swabbed. Supposedly results will be within 24h from Stanford.

Just chiming in to say I'm sad about school possibly being out for the year too. DS1 is in K and LOVES his teacher, his class, and school in general. He had a tonsillectomy last week so he already missed a week of school...school is out until at least the 30, so that's at least 3 weeks of him missing (we are on Spring Break this week, so technically only 2 weeks of instructions, although I'm not worried as he in is a transitional/pre K program). He is already super bummed because his birthday is coming up and he won't be able to celebrate at school (which is a BIG DEAL for a 6 year old!) and we obviously had to postpone his party. Online shopping for some awesome bday gifts to soften the blow...
It all just sucks. It doesn't even seem like real life. And imma bout to LOSE MY MIND with people on social media who are all "it's just the flu, what's the big deal" and "this is all out of control" and "ITS A CONSPIRACY BY THE DEMOCRATS"

I'm in the SF Bay Area and 6 counties just issued a shelter in place, to only go out for the essentials. All non-essential services and business are to close.
I'm working from home, my director and I already had a plan in place. But my husband does sales for a brewery. I have no idea what is going to happen with his job and that makes me nervous.
We have enough groceries for this week and into next week, but we will need a few things starting this weekend. I just hope that stores are stocked again with what we need by then!

@KT326: me too.
I had ordered a bunch of stuff and am needing to do returns.. hoping companies will be lenient or we will be out 1000+ dollars...
pomegranate / 3438 posts
@mrs.kiwi: Aw man. That sucks. Can you call the companies and ask about extending the return window?
apricot / 370 posts
@mrs.kiwi: I'm also in the Bay Area and have returns. I just contacted a few stores and they said they were extending the return window to 90 days. I would assume a lot of places will do that same. It's so frustrating, we've been staying at home except for groceries and nature walks just with our household members but I keep seeing large groups of people out together. I feel like if people keep ignoring the recommendations we'll end up in total lockdown.

@KT326: @AB810: I don’t need to go into stores- just ups, but I am wondering if that is not considered an essential outing if the stores will be lenient I can hold onto the boxes for awhile..

I've just had to review the shelter in place orders. All "essential businesses" can stay open. This is pretty broad. And you can travel to them. Best of luck to you up there in the Bay Area. This is going to be enforced, but lightly so. This is such a crazy time. I'm down in here in SoCal wondering when and if this is going to reach us.

Got a call at 9am that my patient is positive for C-19. I'm out of work self-monitoring through Sunday. Legs are swollen, mental health and anxiety is over-taxed. Worried even more about my family now. I'm just spent.
ETA: We are dropping like flies at work. I know of at least 5 people who have been placed on quarantine or monitoring. The cascade is happening.

@yellowbeach: hope you feel okay and that you are “only” an asymptomatic carrier. Or have light symptoms only, like Rita Wilson/Tom Hanks. I saw someone posted in another thread that in Washington, they are asking positive health care workers who only have light symptoms to continue working on Covid-19 patients. Seems pretty dire.

@yellowbeach: You got tested correct? Has your test come back? It seems to me that at some point mere exposure is not going to be enough to put a healthcare worker in quarantine, otherwise everyone is going to be out.
nectarine / 2648 posts
@BadgerMom: So far my hospital system will not test me. (Long story). Occupational Health is going to try and push to get it done through one of the pathways that I technically don't qualify for, but am a unique situation being 26w5d, so we will see. I would definitely prefer to be tested.

@yellowbeach: Ugh. So frustrating. I just don’t understand how that thinking is going to be sustainable. And I know the answer is, “it’s not, but we’re a reactive not a proactive society.” It’s just so infuriating.
I just want you to know I really appreciate your posts and your perspective here. My husband is an ER nurse and we currently don’t have any confirmed cases in our county, so his work hasn’t gotten “that bad” yet, but I know it’s coming.
grapefruit / 4045 posts
@yellowbeach: Are you considered a first responder? I thought I saw on the news that first responders were part of the group that would be able to get tested. My husband is a first responder and the we are getting more an more positive cases in my county as the hours pass. I felt a little relief that he could get tested if he needs since he so crazily exposed to the public. I hope you can get tested and that you stay as safe as you. I so appreciate what you do!

@BadgerMom: Yeah unfortunately I think he'll get his share soon enough. Hopefully for your community the leaders will be able to see the spread in other US cities and implement capacity plans and testing BEFORE the surge... we are probably a solid week behind playing catchup.

@yellowbeach: I hope you stay as healthy as possible / if you are positive that it is a mild case!
How have the regulations changed for everyone lately? As of noon today all bars/restaurants/social areas are closed (except for pick-up orders). Any events over 10 people are supposed to cancel - which includes my sister's wedding completely, she's working on moving it back to August. Schools closed till April 13th.
I'm still able to go to work for now, but I am nervous I may get laid off because of the recession that is going to follow. I did get laid off in '08, and we just cancelled 90% of advertising, which is my main job, so

@josina: same thing with the closures of bars, restaurants (takeout only), events over 25 people. Thankful for that - the restaurant down my street was packed this weekend when we walked by. We are taking social distancing seriously so was frustrating to see.
Wondering how much longer my husband will be able to work. He cannot work from home, though thankfully he doesn’t seen many people in his day. I’m hoping the business he works for us strong enough to weather the storm even if he can’t work for a time. I’m worried too even as a teacher that my school isn’t going to pay us if we are out for longer than the current 3 week shutdown (which I find a very likely scenario). We are being paid for now and will have professional development to complete. My state Ed dept doesn’t want us doing distance learning...
Sending positive thoughts to all. @yellowbeach: thank you for your perspective and I hope you stay healthy.

@josina: our province declared a state of emergency today and so many places are closed. Just trying to get into a routine with my boys while I work from home. I can see this really affecting the company I work for and am a bit stressed about that. My DH is unsure about his employment. He could end up being off after this week which is scary.

Our governor is calling for schools to remain closed until fall. As a teacher, I feel gutted but I know it's for the greater good.

@yellowbeach: Really thinking of you and feeling quite useless, but wanted you to know that you're in my thoughts nonetheless.
We're on day 3 of staying at home, day 2 of working from home with our 9mo. Wow is this hard. We're splitting our days 50/50 so that we get to work and then working at night to make up the time. It's going to wear us down really quickly. I'm grateful for the time with my son, but it's not like we're kicking back watching movies together. This is nothing compared to what others like Yellowbeach are going through, but I just don't know where else to put these thoughts. I think we'll be here for a while and I just don't know what we'll be like at the end of it besides so so so exhausted. I don't even think I'm processing everything that's happening. I was trying to reflect earlier today and just didn't even know how to comprehend it. My job is going to be impacted somehow when it all shakes out. I just hope I still have it...

@yellowbeach: Sending
We're on shelter in place in the Bay Area. DS came down with a fever and DD is hovering at 99.5.
Naturally DS is my kid that has viral induced breathing issues (previously diagnosed as asthma but at his last well check we were switched from inhalers to oral Singular when sick). I guess we'll call the advice line tomorrow and see what's up.
Today was also day one of distance learning for DD my 1st grader. That was some rough stuff. She was feeling fine and focused well enough but it still took us from 7 - 1 with reasonable breaks. After I told her she was done I realized there was regular homework in addition to her distance learning packet. I nearly cried. Bravo to her teacher for assembling such a packet on short notice but OMG how am I supposed to get this done? She's not capable of doing it on her own. I have a job to do too and another kid (who was super chill with his fever today). I want to support my daughter, the teacher and schools but I already feel like I would have to take leave to keep up with this.
And yes I feel backwards that I'm more stressed about a 1st grader's packet than my sick kid. Weird times, huh?

@Corduroy: If it's any comfort, I imagine the teacher does not have high expectations at all, and she will pass regardless. Stressing out about her "keeping up academically" is something to try to let go. Maybe hide the HW packet and pretend it doesn't exist, bring it out when you're ready.
ETA: I'm a teacher and so is DH. We are on spring break but I expect to be doing distance learning soon.
pomelo / 5258 posts
@DesertDreams88: Thanks, that does bring some comfort. I'm not actually worried about DD getting behind academically since she's in 1st grade. There was just so much pressure to make this time count as distance learning vs a school closure. I'm trying to let that go though. My kid will not be the only one that doesn't complete every assignment. My neighbor, a teacher herself, said she was going to tell the teacher she's only doing the homework packet. I was surprised at first but I think that's a lot more reasonable.

@Corduroy: the district has to emphasize the distance learning instead of a simple school closure bc otherwise they can't pay the teachers. We have definitely gotten that message from our admin in the two districts we work in. @petitenoisette: said similar issues above. We all just have to keep on keeping on.
@petitenoisette: my district is holding back from the distance learning option for now, too. 100% title 1, almost 100% free lunch. One of our main concerns is that many of our parents are still working and thus our middle school students are now babysitting their younger siblings, so, academic work is the least of their concerns.

I have kids at home and I’m doing my full time job and then coming home and doing a ton of hw with my first grader. It sucks.

Schools in Iowa are not requiring this missed 4 weeks to be made up, our preschool teacher did send a packet home but nothing major; I'm trying to print out some work sheets from all the free sources online just to keep DS engaged, he loves to learn.

@DesertDreams88: Our district has been saying all work during closure is optional.

@crazydoglady: through the FALL?! yeesh. even in NYC we're not hearing that. where are you?
nectarine / 2460 posts
@nwm: I'm not sure where @crazydoglady lives, but I saw this morning that Kansas officially closed schools till fall and heard rumors that California was going to do similarly. Our superintendent (in NC) said that while we're officially closed for 2 weeks, that he doesn't expect we'll be going back "anytime soon" so I think a lot of us may be in this for a while
ETA: @crazydoglady - ah hah, CA. Makes sense
persimmon / 1130 posts
@Corduroy: @2littlepumpkins: Don’t stress too much over the schoolwork. We’re virtual teaching, but understand that there are many kids with circumstances that will make this difficult. I’ll do my best to do the work my kindergartener was assigned, but realistically what I care most about is simply reading together as much as we can.
clementine / 830 posts
@JennyPenny: yeah, i mean i'm sure if Kansas is facing that timeline, NYC will be too. I sort of thought it was still to uncertain what effect all of our efforts would have to already cancel, e.g., summer school, but a little depressing to hear that's not the case.
