I've only ever had a co-pay and don't remember the amount insurance is billed. A friend's daughter recently broke her leg and was in between insurance at the time though, and the bill was $15k.

We went to the ER once because DD stuck a bead up her nose -.-
Insurance covered a small amount and we ended up paying around $600. All for a stinkin bead!!!!

We went once for DS (his visit required x-rays) and I think it cost about the same.

Back in November my doctor ordered me to go to the ER because of fluctuating HCG numbers, bleeding, and cramping.... despite a small gestational sac in the uterus she thought it could be ectopic (bc 10-20% of ectopics have a psuedosac) and wanted me at a hospital in case I needed methotrexate. After an uneventful 4 hours, they confirmed it was a blighted ovum, the original diagnosis.

Bill for the in network hospital=$900, bill of the out-of-network phsyician (so annoying!!)=$600, so total of $1500 for what turned out to be not an emergency at all. I have a high deductible HSA plan and that one visit consumed the entire portion of my employer's HSA contributions.

We went to the ER about a month ago. He was sick for an unusually long time so our ped ordered some bloodwork, the results were concerning so we went in, they ran a ton more tests and we ended up being admitted to the infectious disease unit(!) for one night while they watched him and ran more tests. The bill before insurance was almost $13k. I think it will cost us about $1k.

The time we took D to the ER it ended up getting rolled into our hospital stay pay (which is capped at $750 regardless of how long). I got a bill from the ambulance/helicopter ($7k) but I got them to include it in the copay thank goodness.

I went to the er for a m/c (unknown at time) and it was several thousand. As in over $5000. Cost of visit, exam, tests, sonogram.

LO has had 7 ER visits so far this year. Some turned into admissions and some were strictly ER. Luckily everything is covered between our two insurances. We only see a bill if an adjustment was made, but I can only imagine how much she has racked in medical expenses in the last 6 mo.

@mrbee: in your friend's case I would imagine that with a bit of fighting they could get the specialist covered. Have them talk to a financial counselor at the hospital to help figure out how to get it done. I think that most of the time if that's the provider your in network hospital had on call, then insurance will cover it.

We paid 1600 for Ryan's visit when he was 3m and had bronchiolitis. That was the total cost of the visit (we have a high deductible plan so we're responsible for all of it).

My husband had pneumonia when he was a student and they sent him a bill cause they didn't get his health insurance info at the time, and the ER visit was $15k! He said all they did was give him oxygen mask and a shot of something, and was released an hour or less later.

T was throwing up. Had blood work done, urine test, IV fluids, and sent home some zofran. $1400 after insurance.

I just went to the ER about a month ago. It was the first time I'd ever been in a hospital besides when I was pregnant. I was puking and having excruciating stomach pain. The ER staff helped me out so much. But I got IV fluids, a CT scan, zofran, morphine, and two other drugs. Also an EKG because my heart rate was really high. I was there for about 4 hours. I'm really scared for that bill to come in

Yikes!!! My eyeballs just bulged out of their sockets. We went to the ER once when N went from PB exposure, and paid $100.

Our ER co-pay went way up this year because insurance companies are trying to discourage people from going to the ER for non-emergencies. Last year the co-pay was $100 and now it's $400. Luckily I've only had to go to the ER once ever.

Last two times we took N to the ER it was like $300 each time. Our hospital does have a great financial aid department, they work with you on a sliding scale based on income.

Our co-pay for the ER is $100. I've been pretty happy with our insurance plan because the times we've had to go through the ER (for my husband's appendectomy and for my labor and delivery), that's been our only fee for all necessary procedures/hospital stays. Still, I'm knocking on wood that we won't need the ER much!

What does that even mean, to be a consultant at the hospital? I guess its something we have to add to our list of things to try to remember to ask?!?!?

Thankfully, DS has never been. But I've been a couple times for miscarriage and D&C follow up; and DH has once. All we owed was our ER co-pay, which I don't recall at the moment, but no more than $100.
